Roxio causes Media center receiver service error

After 6 months of trying to get MCE stable I found that Roxio suite 8 and 9
(ya I thought 9 would fix it) both cause the constant Media center receive
service error as well as disabling my capture card an aiw x1800x in MCE.
Uninstalling roxio fixes the problem (sometime) good thing for GHOST. I have
reimaged lots of times and reinstalled even more and each time I install
roxio suite it breaks MCE. I am still waiting for ROXIO to reply or come up
with a fix (ya right). Roxio does put DivX and a few other codecs that could
break MCE. I am not sure if anyone else has seen this probem. If you have any
suggestions to get Roxio to work in MCE let me know, for now I have
uninstalled it and everything work great.

Re: Roxio causes Media center receiver service error

If you're primarily using Roxio for imaging, see www.terabyteunlimted.com
for Image for Windows and/or Image for DOS. Foolproof, spans multiple
CD/DVD media and creates a bootable image/image set for a lot less money.

Re: Roxio causes Media center receiver service error

Roxio v8 works perfectly on my MCE desktop. v9 won't work because I have
IE7 installed.

Perhaps it's the AIW. I have the plain ATI TV Tuner and HDTV Wonder cards
and an x850 graphics cards. I'm no fan of combo anything.

Re: Roxio causes Media center receiver service error

I also have the hdtv wonder installed with the aiw x1800. When I remove roxio
everything works. When I install roxio 8 or 9 I get a audio cinemaster.dll
error. It interfears with the ehrecvr.exe service. Not sure if I need the
cinemaster codec?

Re: Roxio causes Media center receiver service error

I'm pretty sure I have the cinemaster decoder installed but try a custom
install of Roxio and choose NOT to install cinemaster and see if it has any
effect. What DVD decoding software do you use? I have WinDVD v7

Re: Roxio causes Media center receiver service error

I fixed the constant MCE receiver service error, heres what I did. I ran the
msconfig a tried disabling just about everything and heres what I found.
Disabling the DMXlauncher, Drgtodsk, roxwatchtray9 and also renaming the 3
roxio cinemaster DLL's (CinemasterAudio.dlx, CinemasterVCDNav.dlx,
CinemasterVideo.dlx) so they don't load this fixed the constant Media Center
Receiver service error. I was able to capture in Roxio media cature program
and moviemaker. But My TV in MCE still disabled, I can not watch MCE My TV or
record. It looks like its the cinemaster codec is not compatable with MCE or
my capture card. Is the a way to uninstall the cinemaster codec. I also saw
on Microsofts knowledge base the DivX codec is also not compatible in MCE. Do
you have instructions how to uninstall DivX.
Thanks

HAD THE SAME PROBLEM AND I HAVE ROXIO 7.5. IT WASN'T THE ROXIO THAT CAUSE MY PROBLEM. SEE THE FIX THAT HP GAVE ME BELOW. I HAVE A SERVICE CONTRACT FROM HP FOR MY MEDIA CENTER PC'S. THAT ERROR MESSAGE KEPT COMING UP EVERY 5 SECONDS AND I COULD NOT DEBUG IT. IT CAME ANNOYINGLY RIGHT BACK. IT WAS MY TV TUNER WHICH I REALLY DO NOT USE SINCE I HAVE A DVD DOUBLE LAYER RECORDER FOR TV'S VCR. HP TOLD ME TO DISABLE IT AND NOW EVERYTHING WORKS JUST FINE AND I CAN STILL USE MY ROXIO, ADOBE, MY DVD 9, DivX, AND MUVEE PRODUCTIONS TO MAKE MY DVD'S ETC. SEE THE FIX BELOW. I HOPE THIS HELPS THE OTHER PEOPLE WITH THIS ERROR MESSAGE. GRANDMA IN NJ

Issue : "Media Center Receiver Service has encountered a problem and needs to close." This error message pops up every 10 seconds even when we are not using the Media Center on the computer

Cause : If the TV Tuner Card installed on the computer is being used by any other software other than Media Center for capturing purposes this issue will occur.

Description : Starting with Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition (MCE) 2005, a process (ehrec.exe) runs at all times, monopolizing the tuner device on the system. The solution is to disable the service responsible for starting the "ehrec.exe" process. Note that this does not occur with versions of MCE prior to 2005. This issue will only occur if a customer is using a software other than Media Center to capture Analog Signals.

Resolution/Workaround:

Navigate to CONTROL PANEL --> ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS --> SERVICES.

Find the "Media Center Receiver Service" in the list; rIght-click on it and select "Properties."

On the "...properties" window that appears when you do so, find the "Startup type:" entry on the "General" tab. Set "Startup Type" to "Disabled" (as shown in the screenshot below) and hit APPLY.

4- Then, reboot the computer.

CAUTION : Disabling this service will prevent the Media Center from showing Live TV. Please educate the customer by informing him that the TV Tuner card can be used by a single software at a time, so if the Media Center is running in the processes (ehrec.exe), use of any other capturing application will cause this error to pop-up on the screen. Ideally customer should only use the Media Center softwares for capturing purposes.
IT REALLY WORKED!!!

Re: Roxio causes Media center receiver service error

First, please turn off you caps lock, it is very hard to read and it is
considered bad manners on forums.

Nothing in the fix you mentioned proves anything about whether or not Roxio
is the problem, all the fix does is to circumvent the problem. The Tuner
would have probably worked just fine without Roxio. Disabling the tuner is
not an option for someone who wishes to use their tuner in Media Center
(which is the vast majority of people using Media Center).

Numerous people have reported similar problem with Media Center and Roxio
and the once Roxio is removed the problems tend to disappear.
