| "drive 1 not found: serial ata, sata-2"
Hello, I have a Dell Dimension E510, Pentium 4 CPU 3.0 Ghz/ht processor, 1.0 gig RAM, Windows XP Media Center Edition w/ SP2, Geforce 6600 GT, PHILIPS DVD RW -+ 8701 dvd drive, etc... I bought this computer a little less than a year ago, it's pretty new and this is the first time it's given me any trouble. I brought it home from school for the summer and hooked it up in my bedroom (with no internet), and it worked fine for a while, but starting about two months ago, every time I switched on the power, during boot-up in DOS, I get a beeping sound and the error message: "Drive 1 not found: Serial ATA, SATA-2 Press F1 to continue, or press F2 to enter setup" This started happening one day, for no obvious reason; I hadn't made any recent changes to the computer installed anything, I was just booting it up like any other day, and bam. Now, if I press F1, the computer continues to boot up normally and everything seems fine, so I've been doing that ever since, although SOMETIMES the computer just hangs at the Windows startup screen or at other times during startup, forcing me to restart. Once I hit F2 and went into setup, found what looked like Drive 1 and switched it to "on" and fiddled with some other things, but this didn't fix the problem so I switched everything back. So basically, for no apparent reason, one day I started getting this error message, and not only that, but it's been getting worse! One time, I got a "Drive 2 not found" error accompanying the Drive 1 error; when I F1'd and continued into windows, my CDROM drive was completely dead! Not only would it not respond, but it didn't even show up under My Computer. I tried to do a Disk Cleanup during that same session, and it crashed, telling me it "can't find certain files on:" and that's it. I restarted and the error was gone. So I'm getting worried. The computer hasn't been hooked up to the internet since I left school, the only changes I've made are to install and uninstall a few programs, mostly games, and copy some files from another computer via CD. If it's some kind of virus, it's unlikely that I could get rid of it because my virus definitions are so old-- but if that turned out to be the problem, I COULD get hooked up to the net to download new ones, but I would want to be sure first. One possibility is that something got jarred loose inside the tower when I was transporting it home. During transfer, the box became mysteriously wet and broke when I was carrying it to the car. The tower, monitor, and everything else got a little jarred on the pavement-- but not much, seeing as I was pushing the box along the ground, resulting in only a small visible scratch on the tower, and some permanent blemishes on my 19" LCD screen (ouch). It worked fine when I hooked it up in my room. The problem didn't start until a few weeks later. This is beyond me. I've never had a problem like this with any of my computers, and it's strange how this just suddenly happened out of nowhere. Anyone have any ideas of why this occured or how to fix it? Sorry for the long rant, and thanks. Damon |

At the Dell logo at boot up, press CTRL+ALT+D. This will bring up the Dell diagnostics. Run it on the hard drive. Tom |

drive 0: st3160023as - pass drive 1: no device drive 2: philips dvd - diagnostic not supported drive 3: no device Thanks for your enlightenment; I hope this doesn't turn out to be too serious, or something the warranty can't cover. My guess is that the cable from the hard drive and cd drive to the motherboard may have come loose. I'd suggest taking the top off the computer, and making sure all cables are firmly secured on both ends... If I recall a previous post, there ISN'T a drive 1, just 0 and 2. Drive 1 should be turned OFF in the BIOS "Dana Cline - MVP" <dcline@scriptpro.com> wrote in message news:%23qV3vKBsGHA.3412@TK2MSFTNGP05.phx.gbl... > My guess is that the cable from the hard drive and cd drive to the > motherboard may have come loose.
