| Vista Media Center and Xbox 360 Extender
I hope someone can help me out this this. I am trying to setup my 360 as an extender to my Vista (x64) PC. i am getting partial connectivity. Some history: When i first setup Vista beta 2 the 360 happened to be off the first time it was turned on vista "saw" it and set up media connect automatically. Nice. But did nothing for media center. I did not feel like setting up media center until now. My approach: i figured vista was "smart" enough to see the 360 I should be able to just set it up as an extender in media center. I looked and there I found the option to set up an extender and it even listed my 360 as not yet setup. A good sigh I thought. So I ran the little wizard to have it fail saying extender communication error try restarting both pc and extender and run setup again. While the 360 showed a hung connecting to media center screen. I restarted it all same result. Time to hit the news groups. http://www.xbox.com/en-us/pcsetup/postmce05/ was a nice help I figured I might have to do something like this. It basically told you to delete the old extender software on the 360 from XP MCE so vista will give it the new one. I did all this same result. Getting frustrated now I couldn't find any more useful help online so I just tried every possible combination of running the wizard from both sides deleting the extender software a few times. I did notice odd behavior if I run the 360 setup while the vista wizard is open (not even connecting just at the start screen) when 360 gets to the point where it generates the key for you it is only on screen for about 4-5 seconds and then starts connecting like I finished the wizard in the other room. This makes it difficult to write down that key fast enough to. Every time every way I try 360 hangs on the media center connection screen (the one with the animated white dots) and vista gives a generic extender communication error or a pc communication error. O and I tried disconnecting and reconnecting media connect to, no effect either way but it at least sets itself up perfect every time and after this was all done I used to play some tunes to calm me. Why can't media center extender be this easy? Anyone with info please help me out. |

| Re: Vista Media Center and Xbox 360 Extender
All the software for the Xbox 360 extender is included in Vista. There is no need to install the Xbox 360 Extender software for MCE2005 (it won't work in Vista anyways). Check the following... Network Category must be set to Private to Add an Extender Description: When a network card is added to the PC the Network Category is set to Public by default and the Windows firewall is configured to prevent discover of Upnp Devices on the network. This discovery is required to find the Media Center Extender on the network. Resolution: Change your network category in network center from "public" to "private". You can do this in the Network Center (This activity will require admin rights): 1. Go to control panel 2. Choose "Network and Internet" 3. Choose "Network Center" 4. In the network details section, Choose "Switch Category" until the network category says "private network". 5. Restart task to Add Extender If that doesn't help, we're going to need more info to troubleshoot the issue. What hardware do you have on the PC (what network cards/motherboard) What region are you in What firewall software are you using (if any) -- Jason Tsang - Microsoft MVP Read my blog for the latest in Media Center topics (and other topics that interest me) http://jtsang.blogspot.com More information by me http://jtsang.mvps.org http://www.classicsunveiled.com Find out about the MS MVP Program - http://mvp.support.microsoft.com/default.aspx "Urchent" <urchent at hotmail.com> wrote in message news:79119875-5395-4D14-977C-960451D187E5@microsoft.com... >I hope someone can help me out this this.
