SPDIF stops when MCE starts

Hi,

I'm having a problem with my SPDIF port. When my PC starts up, the audio is
output to the SPDIF fine. I have the windows start up tune fine and can play
music etc throught the SPDIF. As soon as I start Media center, I hear about
50% of the welcome tune to MCE, but then it stops using the SPDIF and my amp
stops seeing the digital input.

I have 'use SPDIF' in all the audio settings I can find:
windows Audio driver - use SPDIF
Cyberlink Power DVD application - use SPDIF
Media center DVD Audio settings - use SPDIF

I must be missing one setting somewhere, can anyone suggest where else I
need to force it to use the SPDIF in MCE?

Are you sure MCE is using the Cyberlink codec? Use Microsoft decoder checkup
utility. If that doesn't work see if you can open up settings for the codec
while MCE is actually running and check that SPDIF is selected.

You could also try downloading the Nvidia decoder (30 day trial)

I checked and its the Cyberlink being used and supported. DVD's play fine.

I finally tried the Nvidia decoded, but with no sucess. With either the
Cyberlink or Nvidea, as soon as MCE 2005 starts, the SPDIF stops. :-(

By 'DVD's play fine' I mean that the picture is ok for DVD's in MCE, but no
sound. I can also play DVD's WITH sound using the SPDIF outside of MCE, using
the Cyerlink application for example.

Any other suggestions/thoughts? Its starting to drive me a little loopy.

I can't remember now because it's been a while but isn't there a speaker
setup within WMCE itself? 'Passthrough to receiver' or somesuch... You didn't
mention that in your first post.

I recently started setting my XP sounds & audio device
properties/volume/speaker settings advanced/ to 'no speakers'

I think you have to keep digging

Hi,

Yes, there is a speaker setup in WMCE but it calls the DVD decoder audio
settings, so I've set both (Cyberlink and Nvidia) to use SPDIF with no luck
:-(

I'll try setting the Win audio to use no speakers

the Audio device is the onboard processor, C-Media CMI9761 with the latest
drivers.

In Sounds & Audio Device Properties there is somewhere a check box which says
'digital output only' thi scan be hard to find at the best of times and I've
got a feeling not all devices show it.

Have you thought about downloading an older driver to test the setup, you
could try 'roll back to previous driver'

That is probably your problem. I have tried without success to get two different
soundcards (Terratec Aureon & Trust) based on C-Media sound chips to work
correctly with MCE. The documentation for the cards states that to use SPDIF out
you must have the speakers set to stereo or headphones. If you set it to 5.1
within MCE then there will be no sound. Setting to stereo fixes that problem but
unfortunately appears to create another in that MCE will now downmix Dolby
Digital 5.1 to stereo which is then output as PCM over SPDIF. This is presumably
because you have told it that you only have stereo speakers.

I have now installed a Hercules Gamesurround Fortissimo 4 which has a Via sound
chip & now everything works correctly.

I have seen a lot of reports of problems with Dolby Digital 5.1 over SPDIF with
MCE I wonder if all of them have been with C-media sound chips?

I didn't find a 'digital out only' setting and the older driver didn't work
either.

The C-media could be the link then. I'll try the 2 spekers setting and see
if that works. At the moment, 5.1 DD is better than no sound, so if that
works I'll have to find another solution as I don't have a free slot for a
sound card.

Buying that damn ECS EZbuddy2 chassis was the worst thing I ever did! I
should have known from the cheesy name...

The Soundblaster Live external USB box by all accounts works correctly with
SPDIF in MCE.

I think I've found a partial solution, as odd as it may be.

I uninstalled the C-media audio driver and rebooted, then reinstalled the
original C-media driver from the original hardware CD, not just a rollback
driver.

Now I have digital output in MCE, but as was suggested I think its
Pro-logic, its definitly not DTS. The Amp recognizes it as Dolby digital at
least.

looks like there is some change in the later driver the doesn't work with MCE.

Here's what I know. MCE has a bug in it that causes it to mess up the SPDIF
signal when you exit MCE.

My problem is pretty much the same as most that have posted about this
problem. The SPDIF signal somehow either stop being transmitted or get really
messed up so that the receiver does recognize the signal or produces
inaccurate results. In my case, this most often happens with just sound
coming our of the centre channel and nowhere else.

Here’ my work around for this bug.

1) Exit out of MCE to the desk top.

2) Insert a DVD in the DVD layer. “The Incredibles” works great for me. I’ve
tried other and mist will work but some do not. I suggest you use a DVD that
produces 5.1 THX sound.

3) The DVD should start to autoplay. Assuming you have the autoplay set to
USE MCE to play the DVD, MCE should start up.

4) If you have your receiver turned up a little you should hear some popping
and crackling in you speakers. This is the SPDIF sound output somehow being
reset.

5) Your speakers should now all have sound coming out of them.

6) Do NOT exit MCE.

7) Try playing some music or TV. Your speakers should all still have sound.

8) If you exit MCE, you’ll have to redo the steps above. This is because MCE
somehow loses it’s settings or otherwise screws up the signal upon restart.
