long delay with double click and right click when opening a file

I am having a problem with double click to open a file (not
the folder) and right click to bring the file's context menu.It takes
probably between 8 to 15 second to open them. This doesnt' happen with the
folders, just the files. I was told to use shellexview to see all the
handlers and to try disbaling them a few at a time to see which one is
causing the problem. I used it trying to disble different handles to see if
the problem is solved. but it did't help. Can anyone help me solve this
problem. Would replacing all those files i see in shell handler solve the
problem? And how can I do that? Would really appreciate any help..Thanks You

Long Delay Fix

I have found if you have a mapped drive to an unavailble drive (dead link), Office apps will delay opening. Disconnect the link and retry.

Anyone have an answer?

i have a 10+ second delay after double clicking on Word or Excel file in file explorer - .doc .xls - before the Office app begins to open the file. Does NOT happen on PowerPoint (.ppt), Acrobat .pdf, images read by non-office apps, Microsoft Visio (.vsd), etc.

i do not have any network shares mapped as drive letters.

Driving me crazy, any thoughts welcome.

thanks.

Re: long delay with double click and right click when opening a file o

Are the files you are trying to open very large?
Are the application files and the data files on a HDD in your system?
How much RAM do you have?
How much virtual memory do you have assigned?
Has your disk been defragged recently?

Re: long delay with double click and right click when opening a file o

>>Are the files you are trying to open very large?
Happens with files of all sizes

Are the application files and the data files on a HDD in your system?
>>Yes, local on my HD .. apps in one partition, data files in another

How much RAM do you have?
>>2gb, win xp pro 32-bit

How much virtual memory do you have assigned?
>>no idea - system default

Has your disk been defragged recently?
>>not for a few weeks, but i dont think this is the issue (otherwise large ppt files would not load quickly, etc) ...

I think there is a timeout in the .doc/.xls file type handler somewhere - but have no idea how to find ...

thanks for asking.

Re: long delay with double click and right click when opening a file

If you open the application first and then open a file from it does the
same problem occur?
