| MSS1 codec
I can't play the file in windows media player 12 and other media players such as vlc player which suggests that codec is not backward compatible with one found in latest wmp player. So how can i play the file. |

surely there must be a solution to this..? this renders a whole swathe of technet webcasts completely unwatchable for me. i'm using windows7, windows media player 12. I cannot watch the webcasts too. how long will it take to get a solution ? Forever if you can't provide a reproducible URL so I know what you're actually looking at. Again: "> What's a typical technet URL which shows the issue ?" |

You're probably out of luck then. One last thing to try is to grab the Windows XP mode virtual PC, and try installing the codec in that using WMP9 up to WMP11 on XP, to at least get playback : http://www.microsoft.com/windows/vir...c/default.aspx http://www.microsoft.com/windows/vir.../download.aspx Your CPU will need to have the hardware virtualisation feature to be able to run XP mode (it has other uses too so it's worth getting) I've got access to those archives. What's a typical technet URL which shows the issue ? I could see if anybody at their end has noticed they can't be played, if I can find repro content to make a case for updates to the codec used fo rthe videos.. |

Are you somehow related to the original poster or the other 4 people who jumped on this thread randomly ? In the page below, there's a WMA and MP3 podcoast format - the WMA is using Windows Media Audio 9.1 32 kbps, 22 kHz, stereo 1-pass CBR, which is not the MSS-1 codec as reported by the original poster. The WMA9 should play correctly in all versions of WMP from WMP7 and later, without requiring any codec download (i.e. using native WMA playback) |

| Re: MSS1 codec
if I go to that link, and download the wmv file (Recording ID: 1032259652 ), and try to play it on w7 with media player 12.0.7600.16415, I get the message : Windows cannot play the media file because a required codec is not installed on your computer. not being an expert at this stuff, I open the file with Gspot2.7 to determine what codec is used and it says MSS1. I thought this was the same scenario as the original poster. I presumed it would be something simple missing in my configuration, and the original posters'. |

OK I see what you mean now - I could see the Audio links and thought that's what you were clicking on. After a tortous 7 step process to reach the video via registration for the event, the video dates from 2004, when the world was a simpler place. The ACELP audio codec is long long since superceded by for example WMA voice, AAC+ and other formats, and is not provided with modern WMP or on the microsoft download servers. However WMP12 still enables plugin decoders of many types - in this case a DirectShow decoder is required due to the age of the codec. The VoiceAGE codec is (probably) orphaned and available from this page http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Acelp_net_Codec.htm Download and unzip the file to a suitable download folder, then *right-click* the Vista_Install_AcelpNET selected from the Vista link on the download page. Choose "Run as Administrator" for this to work. OK to "Do you want to install the VoiceAge ACELP.NET audio codec?" then you should see a popup "DLlRegisterServer in MFT_anet.dll succeeded" Following that, close and restart media player 12, and double click the livemeeting WMV file to play. The sound quality leaves a lot to be desired so I imagine it's not been worth them re-encoding it using a modern audio codec which everbody has. |

yep. I was just chasing down that audio codec and was going to post the same link. I was chasing the mss1 trail earlier, but it was the audio codec. installed the acelp codec and it's working. http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Acelp_net_Codec.htm much better. thanks.
