| MCE can't find the new frequencies
Well, after the big switch was thrown last night (to pure digital broadcast), my tv had no trouble with rescan and locating the new frequencies of a couple of local channels, but Vista Media Center tried to stay with the old digital frequencies when I re-ran the signal setup routine. Anyone know what it takes to convince MC to look at the new frequencies? Thanks, Charlie |

I would wait until tomorrow's guide download to see if everything straightens out. Otherwise, do this Thanks; downloading updates now & I have the page bookmarked. |

| Re: MCE can't find the new frequencies
I have the same problem... But, I can't follow the instructions on "thegreenbutton.com" as the file they say to edit doesn't exist on my system. I tried searching for it, viewing all hidden files... and found the same file in a completely different location, but it's just about blank.. there's nothing in it; certainly not anything I can "correct". This is just nuts. I can't believe that Microsoft makes it so freaking hard to use their software... wait, yes I can. Anyway, any other approaches to fixing this problem? I mean, why can't you just enter the data in MCE manually? |

Update... Seems the file in question has moved to: c:|programData|Microsoft|eHome|EPG|prefs|atscchannels.xml But, I edited this, and still no luck. What a total cluster****. I've spent way too much time on this, and seems I'm not the only one from reading other forums and such. I simply can't wait to ditch Windows entirely. |

| MANUAL CHANNEL ASSIGNMENTS IN Vista Media Center
MANUAL CHANNEL ASSIGNMENTS IN Vista Media Center ================================================ If you have the patience and nerve, and are willing to give up the User Guide, you can configure ATSC channels in WMC manually. (This procedure is for over-the-air channels, as that's the only procedure I'm familiar with. If you're using cable or satellite, I can't help you, but would guess the procedure is similar) (1) Enter your zip code at http://dtv.gov/stationlist.htm That will give you a list of your local stations and their channel assignments. Print the page. (2) Show hidden system files Go to Control Panel\Appearance and Personalization Select Folder Options Click the VIEW tab and select SHOW HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS (3) Go to C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\eHome\EPG\prefs and copy atscchannels.xml to another folder or your desktop. You'll be modifying this file with your channel assignments. (4) Now delete the folder C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\eHome\EPG (5) Right-click the atscchannels.xml file you saved and select EDIT. (6) Modify this file using the information you printed from DTV.gov The procedure should be self-explanatory. The digital channel from DTV.gov is the "physical" channel in atscchannels.xml, the virtual channel is the "major" and "minor" in atscchannels.xml. NOTE: in my area a couple channels are still in transition and their final channel assignments will be different from the current ones. Therefore, I needed to use the pre-transition channel number from DTV.gov. If you still have missing channels after using this procedure, this might be your problem. Here's an example file. (I'm showing only two stations for simplicity): |

| RE: MANUAL CHANNEL ASSIGNMENTS IN Vista Media Center
I am having the same problem. One of my channels changed frequencies in the move and Vista Media Center has not updated it to the new frequency. So I have nothing. DaveD, when you say "...willing to give up the User Guide...", do you mean there is no Guide at all? So you have no idea what's coming on and you cannot set up recordings etc? I just need to clarify, because if I try your method and we have a blank Guide, I have some people who are going to be ticked. |

| Re: MANUAL CHANNEL ASSIGNMENTS IN Vista Media Center
I'm afraid that's the case. To the best of my limited experience, if the guide's channel assignments are hosed, you can't fix it without overriding it. Maybe someone else knows a better way, but this works for me. You CAN get the same info from the web, if you go to zap2it.com and enter your zip. You can also tailor the guide to show only the channels you care about. That's how I do it. I don't watch enough TV to make the guide useful, plus I only use media center on my desktop - I have a separate tuner for the big panel - so the web guide works just fine for me. |
