| Cannot connect Xbox 360 Elite to Vista Media Center
I have tried connecting my Vista Home Premium laptop to my Xbox 360 with no success. My laptop can 'see' the xbox 360 in the network map, but the Xbox cannot see the laptop when trying to share media and the laptop cannot connect when trying to configure the Media Center Extender for the Xbox. I've seen this problem reported a number of times, even on this forum, but haven't found any answers on how to solve it. Any help would be appreciated. |

Is your XBOX and computer both connected to your local network? |

you need to describe your network in detail. wired? wireless? what router? uninstall Norton or McAfee, is it a laptop with a fingerprint reader? without details, you are unlikely to get a solution. |

| Re: Cannot connect Xbox 360 Elite to Vista Media Center
My home network is running off of a Netgear WNDR3300 wireless N router. My Xbox 360 is connected via an ethernet cable, and my Laptop (a Dell XPS 1530) is connected via Wireless-N on the 5 Ghz band. I am confident that the network modes are intersecting in the router, because when I look at the network map on my laptop, the Xbox 360 is visible. My laptop does have a fingerprint reader, though I don't use it (and hopefully, that is not relevant...). My laptop is running Vista Home Premium (kept up to date with auto- update), and I do have the most current edition of Windows Media Player 11 (11.0.6001.7004) on it. I have explicitly given sharing authorization to my Xbox through the Laptop's File/Media Sharing settings. The Windows Media Center Version is 6.0.6001.18000. I thought it might be helpful to try and uninstall and reinstall Windows Media Player, but apprently it's a built in part of the Vista OS and I haven't found the place to try and remove it then reinstall it yet. I am using the standard Microsoft Firewall, along with Microsoft Defender and AVG Anti-Virus Free. During my numerous connection attempts, I have tried disabling all of these, with no success. I even went into the firewall and manually entered in the port exceptions listed on the Xbox help screen during connection failure. The router setup is defaulted to allow UPnP discovery with 30 min advertisement period and a 4 hop Time to Live. Please, let me know if there are any other details which might be relevant. |

There was a known problem with HP Fingerprint readers and connecting Extenders, I don't recall if that also existed with the Dell systems. If you aren't using the reader, you could try completely removing the software and see if that helps. |

I don't think I'm running any specific software for the fingerprint reader. I uninstalled the device, but still no luck. One thing I find odd is that my other computer detects the Xbox and a little notification call out pops up asking if I want to set up the extender for the Xbox. My laptop, which has the media and the faster 5 Ghz connection, never does this. I meant in the above post that I was trying to uninstall Windows Media Center, not Windows Media Player... |

all fingerprint software poses an issue. check the Dell support page for your model laptop and find the name of the software and uninstall it or stop the service. |

I uninstalled the programs and restarted the computer, but still could not connect. I tried connecting via a enthernet cable, and was able to get the Media Center connected. But once I disconnect and go back to wireless, I lose the connection again. Is there some setting I need to adjust to make sure I can connect over the wireless network? My router is a Netgear WNDR3300 Wireless N Router. Here is the output from the ipconfig /all: |

you mentioned 5GHz - what wireless router are you using? also, please post the text output of ipconfig /all from the laptop. instructions on how to do this try disabling IPv6 on the wireless NIC. do you see the 360 in the network window? I do see the Xbox 360, and have explicitly enabled it for sharing. Should I still diable IPv6? can you please try this? what is the IP of the Xbox 360? The Xbox 360's IP address is: 192.168.1.3 and you have definitely uninstalled the fingerprint reader software? can you check this again please? not just disabling the device but UNinstalling the software. what programs load at startup? |

To verify, I reinstalled the fingerprint Software Suite, then uninstalled it again. I still could not connect. I tried connecting after reinstalling the software, and I actually made it farther in the process, to the "configuring extender settings" step. Then I unistalled the software and could only make it to the "Searching for extender" step. I then disabled and uninstalled the driver, with no more success. Between each step I made sure to restart the computer. My current status is: Software uninstalled, driver uninstalled, and device disabled. |

In my startup folder, I have Cisco VPN Client and the Dell Wireless USB manager program. The VPN clients starts, but does not automatically connect. The other programs that start are Steam, AVG Anti-virus Free, Windows Defender, the Bluetooth manager, and the MS Office OneNote Side note manager. |

I would try exiting the Cisco VPN client completely. I uninstalled the VPN client, and I still cannot get past the "searching for extender" step. did you reset the network stack open an administrative cmd prompt netsh winsock reset restart the computer any change? |

one more thing, if the 360 was setup with an association with the wired adapter previously as you mentioned, you need to remove it in the xbox dashboard |
