WMP Not opening *.wmv files - Vista OS

I have Vista Home Premium OS w/ service pack 1

Windows media player is Version 11 for Vista

My buddy sends me funny *.mwv files. when I dbleclick on the file to open it
in Outlook the media player opens with this message
"Windows Media Player cannot access the file. The file might be in use, you
might not have access to the computer where the file is stored, or your proxy
settings might not be correct."

When I dbleclick on web help this message shows up "You've encountered error
message C00D11D2 while using Windows Media Player. The following information
might help you troubleshoot the issue. "

The following info is not help at all.

any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks in Advance

Paul

John

I tried disabling enhanments, rebooted, etc. and it didn't work. And yes, I
did goggle C00D11D2. It seem this error is a general error and none of the
info provided at the Microsoft website applied. Just so you know other
graphic files, like avi, open just fine

thanks for the reply though

Now for the wierd part. My buddy sent me a new WMV file this morning and it
opened just fine, yet all of the previous e-mail with wmv files attached
still do not open.

Try just saving the file attachments and playing from your hard disk.

Playing back from the email program directly is marginal, and often
breaks (email program tells WMP wrong file type, or can't send data
fast enough for playback or...)

I already tried saving to the HD with no success. I download the VLC player
and the codecs files and it works just fine. I would prefer to have just the
WMP do every thing, rather then have a seperate player for wmv files.

thanks for the suggestion

If you right-click the saved file in windows explorer, choose
Properties from the menu the Details .

Does the file Name end in .wmv - or is it just because it's a media
player file icon that you think it's WMV ?

On the Details tab, what is listed in the Video section for size
(width x height) and data rate / frame rate ?

In VideoLAN, press CTRL + J to show the codec details while the video
is playing. What does that list as the Codec ?

Yes, it is a Windows Media Audio/Video File and the file name ends with .wmv

width = 320
height = 240
Data Rate = 300kbps
Frame rate = 25 frames/second

What is VideoLAN??

Here is some more info, when I try to use Window Media player, it shows the
file over on the right side with a red circle with an "x" next to the file
name
If I right click and select properties under "Media Usage Rights" it says
"This file is not protected"
Some of the files that do not play say "This file is missing media usage
rights"

The few files that do work with WMP also say "This file is not protected"

very confusing.

In adition *.avi files work just fine as do *.mpj

Thanks for helping with this

Paul

Was it you who said " I download the VLC player
and the codecs files and it works just fine." ? ;-)

Re: WMP Not opening *.wmv files - Vista OS

I myself have exactly the same problem, it also occurs with all wmv files stored on any drives on my system, including the sample wmv videos that come with Vista.

WMP 11 is the only media player that doesn't play the files, Media Player Classic and VLC media player play them with no problems, which seems to point the finger at WMP itself as being the cause of the problem and nothing to do with the issues outlined in the help page accompanying the message.

TechArena is horrible and deletes context.

What precisely happens within WMP when you try to play the files?
http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html#isolate
may help you provide better information about your problem.

Re: WMP Not opening *.wmv files - Vista OS

When I play the file WMP opens and immediately displays the message.

"Windows Media Player cannot access the file. The file might be in use, you might not have access to the computer where the file is stored, or your proxy settings might not be correct."

In answer to the questions in the referred to link

1 No mmswitch.ax file on my system (full search including hidden files/folders)
2 Vista 32bit fully patched
3 Windows Media Player version 11.0.6001.7000
4 The message above displays when .wmv files are played (any .wmv files from any source)
5 It only happens in Windows Media Player (Media Player Classic and VLC media player play them with no problems)
6 No mplayer2.exe on my system
7 All .wmv files Internet or local (Internet .wmv files don't seem to give any message they just don't open)
8 Only .wmv files (I don't have any .wmv sound only files)
9 .wmv
10 All other files play normally (as far as I'm aware)
11 Double click the file, drag and drop and use the meue to open all result in the same message
12 see 11 above
13 No idea how someone else could reproduce the error
14 Any URL with .wmv content will not playback the content
15 NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GX2 (driver version 180.48)
16 Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio (Vista)
17 Not to my knowledge
18 It doesn't appear to be a networking issue
19 No code just the message
20 No crash and no error report
21 No Blue screen
22 WMP6 is not installed
22 WMP7 lists the above mentioned version number

I hope this information helps you to rectify the problem. I would also say that some other program could be causing the problem. I installed Spyware Search and destroy a while back and it disabled the video preview in explorer for some reason, when I uninstalled it the preview worked again. I hasten to add however that the .wmv issue was happening before that particular event took place.

Click Web Help on that error dialog: what URL does it take you to?
