system restore doesn't work

i have been battling a virus with various programs, i have onecare running...
scans are coming up clean. but i can't create a system restore point. error
says restart and try again but that doesn't work. it is not a matter of space
on the drive. and i've tried disabling and re-enabling system restore. any
ideas?

A very good reason to do regular backups of the system.

If you had a good clean image of the hard drive, you could restore the
system to that time in just a few minutes.

I use this True Image.

Now you will have to either, find the virus and clean the machine or do a
Clean install of the OS and all your programs.

If it is a Dell, you might be able to resort to factory settings, by
pressing Ctrl+F11 when the blue bar shows during Boot.
