IR Hardware Not Detected?

When attempting to configure WMC with a Comcast set top box, I keep
getting a "IR Hardware Not Detected" error, and cannot complete the
installation. I spoke with HP support, and they want to to a "recovery",
which will ensure the drivers are not corrupted. I'm not so sure. In the
hardware device manager, I performed a driver update for consumer IR
devices, and it completed saying that the driver was the most recent. So,
I ran the HP update program which updates HP specific drivers, and it did
not update anything related to the IR port. However considering the
error message, It does sound like a driver issue.

The documentation shows what is referred to as an "IR Blaster", which
needs to be connected to a USB port. HP says that the internal IR port
in the front of the PC has replaced the external device, which makes
sense.

I've read several posts on this issue, and still do not have a solution.
I'm supposed to call back UP when I backup all of my important files.
Good grief. I searched the MS knowledge base for this error, and got no
results. Any ideas how to fix this?

do you have an external device that plugs into a USB port or do you
have an internal IR/eHome receiver? it isn't exactly clear here.
either way there should be a blaster cable with a male plug on one
end that connects to the pc or external blaster and a sticky led
that you stick over the "eye" of the STB's receiver.

which HP model exactly? what version of windows?

and to add to Barbara's comment. The internal IR port you may have in the PC
would only replace the function of an external IR *Receiver*, an IR Blaster
is an *emitter*, it would rebroadcast an IR signal to some other device
(like a cable set top box). Generally, the blaster would have a special port
to plug into on the PC, many times it looks like a 1/8" audio plug.

This is an HP Pavillion m9400z running Vista home premium 64 bit SP1.
The PC has an IR port on the front of it. According to HP support in
India, this internal IR port supplants the external remote sensor which
was NOT included with the shipment. However, the diagram in the manual
show this remote sensor connected to the PC via USB. The PC did come
with an IR cable, which connects to the back of the PC, and the other end
is placed over the IR window of the cable box, as you described.
