The Blue Screen of Death!

Hiya. Last week, I switched on my laptop (Windows XP) and got a blue screen
when I booted up which said;

Checking file system on C. The type of file system is NTFS. Volume label is
HDD. One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency.

I let it run for its consistency check, which took about a minute and it
then re-booted itself and when it re-started, I had the option of launching
in regular XP home edition or in recovery mode.

The second time I booted up, I skipped the consistency check and it again
gave me the option of home edition or recovery mode. On both occasions, if I
skip consistency and click on 'home edition', I can get into my compuer fine.

I have backed everything up to be on the safe side and have scoured the net
for possible solutions. I have run HD Tune on my computer and the results
were 'Ok' - said there were no issues and everything seemed to be working
find on the hard drive (which was some consolation). I then ran CCleaner and
got rid of a bunch of dud files and did a registry check....it repaired 303
problems. I then tried to run Defrag but each time I click on it, nothing
happens. On an earlier attempt, it said it couldn't open it because a Chkdsk
was scheduled. Soooo, once again, I rebooted and let it run through its
Chkdsk. This time it halted midway because there was 'an unspecified error'.
I re-booted for the (what fourht, fifth time), skipped disk check and here I
am.

Now, the best advise I have been given so far is to re-boot with my Windows
installation disk ...but I have had the hugest search for it tonight and
cannot find it. I don't know if it's possible to get a replacement? Or can
I use someone else's?

Sorry for all the innane questions - I am hoping someone will be able to help.

Re: The Blue Screen of Death!

Before you do anything else, determine the mfg of the hard drive and
download and run their diagnostic utility, do not rely on what HD tune told
you.

Re: The Blue Screen of Death!

Thank you. I just looked it up on the Packard Bell website and it says its
a
Seagate Momentus 42 Hard Disk Drive. I've googled for their site but can't
find anything!!! Any ideas where I might find their site and diagnostics
utility?
