slow internet connection in vista

I have just bought a new laptop with vista OS. For three days now I have been experiencing occasional slow downloads. The previous two mornings I have had download speeds of ~500kbps but later in the day this drops to ~15kbps. I thought this might be an issue with my ISP but it is rather coincidental that it has occurred three days after changing computers and therefore operating systems. I have been with ISP for 1.5yrs and not experienced any similar issues in the past when on XP. Any suggestions?

This doesn't really seem connected to the purpose of this newsgroup
(windows media). There's free technical support currently available
for Vista service pack 1, I'd take advantage of that if I were you :
