| Media center cant see or play DVD files on HD
Got a simple question. Here is the scenario: New to Media Center Vista 32 bit home premium. I backup my DVDs to my HD. The backup has no compression no conversion, it is a mirror image of the original DVD (original DVD file format). Tested a copy of the backup and played it via Win media. No problem. How do I get Media Center to to see and play DVD backup from HD??????? I added the backup to the library. It sees the Audio and Video folder but, it also claims that there are no video files in folders to play. "Play DVD" defults to DVD drive and I don't know how to redirect it to the HD location. Please help. |

If so, try mounting it with a disc image mounting program such as MagicISO. These are programs that make an image file look like a DVD, so you can play it as though it were a DVD. If you mean you copied the files to folders on the HD, you probably can't play it through MCE. Look for others who are more knowledgeable to correct any mistakes I made above :-) -- Gene E. I see where you are going with this. The file format in question is/are Video_ts, .vob, vts-01-1.vob, If you "explor" any movie DVD bought from a store, you will see those files. But that brings up more questions. What I'm trying to do is to eliminate the actual DVD "disk" by copying all of my DVD movies on my HD. Thereby creating a movie library on my HD. From there, I want to use the MCE as a explorer and player for my movie collection. Now if I use ISO, do you think that the MCE video library will recognize the ISO file as a video? If not, and I use MCE "play DVD", then I still do not know how to redirect the application from the DVD drive to the location of the ISO file on the HD. Although my DVD's have been ripped, for a lack of a better word they have been "copied" from DVD disk to HD. So if that is the case, you think that MCE will NOT play those files. Although possible, it is hard to believe since MCE "play dvd" knows the file format and so does Media Player. Any thoughts? "Gene E. No, based on your comments, you don't see where I'm going with this. 1. A directory on your hard drive with all the files of a DVD is *not* a DVD and most programs will not play the VOB files. This is because the underlying structure is not actually the same as a DVD structure on a DVD. 2. An image file on your computer (.nrg from Nero, .iso from other programs) *is* a DVD when mounted by a DVD emulator. That is, everything on the PC will then see this mounted image as a DVD because the mounting programs make it look so (even Windows Explorer will show it as a DVD). Any DVD player program will then play it. 3. All you have to do is create the image :-) Protection schemes will get in your way for some DVDs. There are programs to rip DVDs and fight the protection, but I'm not going there now. You can Google for DVD rippers. 4. These work similarly for CD images, which can be handy. The only thing you have to do is to change your registry. The key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Media Center\Settings\DvdSettings\ShowGallery should be "Gallery" instead of "Play" and after that your DVD Gallery will be shown in Vista Media Center. Maybe you have to add the folder where you have stored your DVD's, but that's done by the I (info)key in the DVD Gallery. ..Nico "D.O.D" <DOD@discussions.microsoft.com> schreef in bericht news:8FF37DFD-6AB4-47F1-83D8-87EC00C9847F@microsoft.com... > Got a simple question. You know Gene, you seem like a totally nice guy in this post. When you responded to my email to Jason under the topic of someone having problems getting MCE to work, you were so different. I enjoyed reading your post in this thread. It was very detailed, informativer, and patient. "Gene E. Bloch" wrote: > No, based on your comments, you don't see where I'm going with this. > > 1. It probably has much to do with the tenor of the posts I was responding to. On 10/03/2008, Jerry Henderson posted this: > You know Gene, you seem like a totally nice guy in this post.
