Display Properties

Hello,

A virus (Joke-Blue Screen.c) was installed on my computer and has taken
control of my screen saver. When I click on "Display Properties" I receive
only three options: Themes, Appearance and Settings, instead of the five
options, the virus as removed Desktop and Screensaver. Can anybody help me
with this problem?

I use Windows XP I have installed service pack 3.

I have since removed most all of the virus with acception to this one.

I would appreciate any help you can offer.

Re: Display Properties

Try running Malwarebytes (malwarebytes.org), it makes quick work of that
one.

RE: Display Properties

Hello Virginia man, just came across to the solution, i had the same problem
as yours. It works for me.

Just do this,

Run regedit;

Navigate to

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System

If there is a DWoRD Value such "NoDispScrSavPage" with a data value of 1
this will disable the screen saver tab. Change the value to 0 or delete it to
see the tab again.
i see that you have the screensaver tab but see if there is anything else
that looks like it is for the other tabs

goodday :-)

RE: Display Properties

Just change value from 1 to 0
for
"NoDispScrSavPage"
"NoDispBackgroundPage"

don't delete it.

RE: Display Properties

I'm having a similar problem. I changed the valuse of "NoDispScrSavPage"
and "NoDispBackgroundPage" to 0 and the tabs are back, but now I can not
select a wallpaper. The browse button is greyed out and I can only change the
color of the backgound.

Is there another value to alow selecting a wallpaper?

Re: Display Properties

Yes, there is another reg key.
http://hardware.mcse.ms/message186271.html

The cure is the last try message. Third message from the bottom.

The word "System" is supposed to be one word without the equal sign.

Correct version:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System

Delete the Value "Wallpaper"

RE: Display Properties

I too have my desktop tabs back and I almost have everything back to normal
except, I've forgotten how to make my Desktop icon text background clear. I
was wondering if anyone knows how to make it so only the desktop icon and
text appear and not the background colored box around the text.

Much Thanks,
Jimmy

Re: Display Properties

I think this is right:

Right click on a blank area of the desktop
Select "Properties" from the context menu that pops up
Select the Appearance tab
Click on the Effects button
Check the box "Show shadows under icons"
Reboot

I don't want to reboot right now to verify this, so you're on your own
:-)

Re: Display Properties

Goto the System Control Panel, Advanced, Performance settings, then click
the Visual Effects tab

Check the Use Drop Shadows for Icon Labels on the desktop option

Also in conjunction to the above setting, right click your desktop, then
arrange icons, and make sure lock items to web desktop is not checked off

RE: Display Properties

This was awesome! Thank you so much. One question however, I changed all the
values as recommended and things were fine until a day later... Then we were
right back to where we were. Any additional suggestions?
Thanks again!

Desktop Background tab disappeared

I have the same problem. Your solution works well , but when I re-start computer, that happens again.
By the way, do I need to save or do something when finish changing value in Regedit to 0, I just exit out of regedit?
THanks a lot
