WMP11 windowsxp-x64..Video codecs

I am running Windows XP 64bit os and have Windows media Player 11. Now the problem is when I check program files, I found that WMP has files in Syswow64 as well as in System32 and is listed under programs files x86. So according to this, I think the WMP is actually 32bit but has been tweaked in some way for XP x64, isn’t it?

Now for playing some video files in avi, mov, etc formats, it is asking me for video codecs. So Should I download 32bit codec or 64bit codec? Also is there any third party DVD player available for 64bit OS? Many thanks.

It will be very difficult to find out whether it requires 32bit or 64bit codec but you can get the required one directly from windows update. Just open Windows update, in the left pane search for “use Administrator Settings”, here click Windows Update Catalog and type Windows XP x64 Codecs. You will get the compatible codec for your system. just download and install.

Thank you very much for the help Pugsly. I tried searching for 64bit codec as per your instruction but it is not able to show up any such thing in Windows Update catalog. Under C:/Windows/System 32 I also checked DirectX Sys.Info, and I guess that I need the 64bit codec itself, right?

I need to confirm it because I know if put wrong codec or driver I’ll need to suffer with BSODs in future.
