Can't see AVI files when i play them on my WMP11

I downloaded some movies from internet which are in AVI format. When I play them with Windows Media Player the screen remains black but I can hear the sound properly.

What’s the problem? Windows Media Player wont support AVI videos?

I was facing the same problem while playing AVI and FLV videos downloaded from web. After spending many hours on internet I finally came to know that it is because of lack of codec. The best suggestion I got to fix it was DiVX codec. I installed the same and problem solved.
