SOME mp3 files don't play in Windows Media Player 11 - others play fine. Other players play the ones WMP won't. Seems to refer to error C00D1199. This has to have been asked before, but I can't find an answer to it. Google, the MS WMP site, MSKB, and even this board have broad references (...little to nothing in terms of a single fix...), but none that I've found productive. All files have previously played fine in Windows Media Player - I think up to at least version 10 running XP Pro. I got a new machine with WMP 11 (build 11.0.5721.5145) and XP Media Center Edition (v 5.1 with SP2). Now many mp3 files error out in WMP (error is: 'Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file.' Through WMP 'Web Help', this is error C00D1199.). These files play fine in mp3 Bookhelper, Creative Mediasource Player, and Irfanview. Encoder type doesn't matter; some xings and Lames play, others don't. All boxes in WMP File Types are checked (includes mp3). Error occurs on SOME files but not others. All previously worked in WMP. Size doesn't matter. Disk and location on disk doesn't matter. The same files will play or won't play off CD or hard drive. I've not yet tried any videos. Guesses, anyone? additional info - WMP 'web help' gives detail 'C00D002F Invalid or corrupt data was encountered.' |

Open the problem files in a sound editor and resave them as mp3 again without changing anything. That usually repairs metadata errors or replaces missing bits of data. MP3 CODECs are all 3rd party products and those other programs you tried might not be using the same mp3 codec as WMP is on that computer. Creative's mp3 codecs have been problematic in the past in other-than-Creative software. Irfanview OTOH is known for being able to open corrupt/damaged files that other similar software cannot. |

Thanks for your reply. Your suggestion is even easier than what I ended up doing. I'll have to try it on the next go around. I finally noticed that the track play times displayed in Explorer were reading 0 instead of the expected 45 minutes or so. I just re-wrote the tags and they worked - probably the same thing your cure does. I'm amazed at how a program that worked flawlessly for me before on these same CD files has been improved to where now only it detects a corrupted file and fails to work. |

Yup, same result. I doubt it was WMP11 that is the difference here. I rather suspect that your previous PC used a different, more fault tolerant, codec to play the files than your current one does. I've seen exactly that same problem many times over the years with any version of WMP. Explorer set in Details view with the appropriate extended data enabled will show up these "0" length, "0" bitrate, mp3 files. |

I had the exact same problem and in my case it was caused by a corrupted ac3filter.ax file. If you have ac3filter installed follow the instuctions below to fix the problem if not then it is most likely due to a diffrent codec which is corrupt. -Uninstall ac3filter from Add/Remove -In cmd unregister ax3filter.ax (regsvr32 /u ac3filter.ax) -Reboot -Delete ac3filter.ax from it's directory -Download the latest ac3filter setup from ac3filter.net and install All corrupt mp3 files should now work on WMP11 |
