| "Windows Media Player has stopped working"
I have Windows Vista, so uninstalling and reinstalling the player is not an option. This message now pops up whenever I try to run Windows Media Player. My other music players (like Napster, Realplayer, Quicktime, Itunes etc) all still work, but Windows Media Player seems broken. This happened after I installed a tv/video program that was designed for XP. I uninstalled that program, and rebooted my computer, but the problem is still there. I have rebooted my computer several times since then, but everytime I try to run Windows Media Player, I get a message saying "Windows Media Player has stopped working". I don't want to have to reinstall my entire operating system and reinstall all new applications (excluding the one that caused the damage). I got my system with Vista preinstalled on it. The system restore disk would also wipe all my music, email saved on my computer, and everything else that was not on my hard disk when I got the computer new. I would also have to reinstall all windows updates since then. Argh........ |

What's the fault bucket data for that crash I got it off ebay. Buyer beware, I guess. I'm surprised a compatibility warning never popped up for this product. Ouch - from which seller? I'll follow up with a hundred or so of them in an attempt to further squelch this. On the positive side, this might help me reproduce the error and thus finally get a tailored fix (my current fix is extreme overkill). =\ I would be ecstatic to get a copy of this. (I already purchased a copy a while ago, but the vendor wouldn't reissue my lost PW). Please send me details to zachd at microsoft dotty com - this will help me finish my targeted solution here. |

| Re: "Windows Media Player has stopped working"
Thank you! The information on the page you referenced was most helpful. Sure enough, the offending program was most likely Satellite TV for PC 2006. Using the command "regsvr32 wmp.dll" seems to have fixed the problem that was preventing Windows Media player from running at all. The plugin for Internet Explorer had not been working either since I had installed that program, but I can always reinstall the plugin for Firefox and use it instead if necessary since it was not tied directly into the operating system. By the way, I also have an analog TV tuner card from Kworld, and it is also possible that something in the software included in that card may have been incompatible with Vista. I already updated my video card driver (in response to another issue with a 3rd party game), so I knew that wasn't the issue, and I already upgraded to the latest version of WMP11 for Vista via automatic windows updates. Ironically, this upgrade made it impossible to install the download of WMP for Vista off the microsoft site for Windows Media Player since an older version is posted there (6.0.5489.0) and hidden in the Windows Media Player for XP section. Seriously, someone should put a section up in the Vista section that helps users reinstall Windows Media Player 11 for Vista should their copy become corrupted. Here is the crash info: Problem Event Name: APPCRASH Application Name: wmplayer.exe Application Version: 11.0.6000.6344 Application Timestamp: 46e5f12e Fault Module Name: kernel32.dll Fault Module Version: 6.0.6000.16386 Fault Module Timestamp: 4549bd80 Exception Code: c0000005 Exception Offset: 000494c4 OS Version: 6.0.6000.2.0.0.768.3 Locale ID: 1033 Additional Information 1: 1171 Additional Information 2: 12bb25806a6af29c4ccacb639b7ba26e Additional Information 3: 5bee Additional Information 4: 5affbbc003a099bc09e613eacd87f746 |

There is currently no reinstall for Windows Media Player for Windows Vista in any capacity whatsoever, sorry. The Vista install architecture was not designed for reinstalls/reapplication of subcomponents. If a patch/fix was available, it would have to more interesting than that. =\ How did you get SatelliteTVforPC 2006, and where did you get it from? That should be off the market THAT WILL BREAK SEVERAL THINGS. THIS: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947541 IS WHAT YOU WANT TO DO. YOUR INSTRUCTIONS WILL CAUSE PROGRESSIVE DOWNLOAD TO FAIL. THEY ALSO WILL NOT WORK DUE TO UAC. BUT YOU ARE ON THE RIGHT TRACK. =) PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHO IF ANYONE IS STILL SELLING THAT OLD OLD VERSION OF SATELLITE TV FOR PC. THIS SOFTWARE SHOULD NO LONGER BE AVAILABLE. THANKS! |

Seller was ch3bcd however this was probably a closeout since nothing similar to what I bought is currently being offered for sale by the same seller. I was a bit skeptical that the program would work, but I didn't think I had much to lose since it was really cheap. I already rated the seller as soon as I got the program to work and receive international tv stations online on my pc, overall positive feedback since the seller had not specifically stated it would work with Vista, and had in fact delivered the goods, via zip archive. I still have copy of said zip archive on my hard drive if you need it. To make matters worse, I was also trying to work with installing a usb analog tv tuner card from Kworld around the same time, so wasn't sure which one had caused the problem for sure. |

I HAVE THE FIX FOR "WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER STOPPED WORKING" (VISTA) If you have installed Satellite TV for PC (any version)... 1.REMOVE IT!! (START>>CONTROL PANEL>>ADD/REMOVE) 2.RESTART YOUR PC 3. RUN 'regsvr32 wmp.dll' FROM START 4. TRY TO RUN WMP AND SEE IF IT WORKS!! (did for me!) |
