XP Media Sharing in WMP 11 problem

After hours of troubleshooting, I've finally managed to get my vista laptop
and XP desktop to talk to each other and can now swap files/media etc.
I would like to use my PS3 as a media centre for the two computers, and
managed this no problem with the PS3 and WMP 11 on my vista laptop. However,
when going through the same steps to set up media sharing on my XP desktop
using WMP 11, when I check the "share my media" box under the "library" tab
in WMP, nothing happens - when I did it in vista I got a pop-up with a list
of devices I could choose to share with and the PS3 was there. Under XP it
just freezes up and no pop-up appears. If I go back to configure my sharing
options unde the library tab, then the "share my media" check box is back
un-ticked.

Yes I have. I was given this same valuable help by someone here to whom I am
indebted.

In Admin' Tools/Services
Start SSDP Discovery Service and then start Universal Plug and Play Device
Host Service
I was advised to set a Restore point beforehand just in case.

You should then find that WMP11 Media Sharing will turn on and discover the
device.

I too am having the problem that Windows Media 11 will not share media as
whne I check the tick box to share my media nothing happens.

I go to services and ensure SSDP is running and it is

When I go to start UPnP it says

"The Universal Plug and Play Device Host service on Local Computer started
and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they have no work to
do, for example, the Performance Logs and Alerts service."

I can't think of anything obvious that might help there.

I received the tip myself from someone else so I am not the expert here.

Just basic things
Are you setting the UPnP to Manual and then starting it? That's how I did
mine.
When you check the sharing tick box, you click O.K. then does the O.K. just
return?

Perhaps you need to have the device you want to share with this PC, on and
connected, maybe even trying to share.

The remark "no work to do" maybe means it didn't detect any device trying to
share with it?

XP's networking doesn't support full sharing, sorry. =\

i guess wmp 11 doesn't share that easily as you would like... atleased thats what i'm experiencing.

its actually rather strange what i have.

i have one laptop with vista sp1 x64 and one other now with xp sp3 latest updates.

anyway, i hae been trying to set up media sharing between the 2 only for some reason on the xp one i'm not being able to see my vista pc but the otherway around i am!? now i must say i'm not very fund of the vista firewall but i think i have give the xp laptop all the permissions it should have to see it.

also in the vista one there is an option for looking for other devices and in the xp wmp11 there isn't?

any tips/tricks for working around this.(i already tried restarting the services you mentioned earlier but that doesn't do the trick.

there's no patch or program that enables it?

you any other program which shares media over a network??
i have itunes and works great! only doesn't really work with videos in my experience...

i don't know if you ever have used itunes but that can easily share its entire library on xp and on vista. so i don't see the problem...

i have been able to share the library of the xp machine but i haven't been able t receive the library from the vista machine on xp. thats the part that is strange to me...

As far as I know: XP can act as a server (You have to enable UPnP manually) but not as a client. So other computers can play the contents stored on a XP but XP can't play the contents of any other device acting as a server.
Vista can act both as a client and a server.

You could use TVersity I believe, or any other program that supports partial
sharing like that. Nothing is going to fully work here on XP.

Excellent! Thanks you helped me too, yes i know you didnt come up with the
answer but you shared it, thats is most helpful.

don't know if anyone is still following this thread but i'll give it a go. Did what Nigel said and it worked fine then the next time I tried it didn't. I've set the upnp to manual and even tried it on auto but it doesn't work. MP sees my ps3 but the ps3 cannot connect. All settings are correct. When I try and stop the upnp I get a message saying: "The Universal Plug and Play Device Host service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they have no work to do, for example, the Performance Logs and Alerts service."
anybody got any ideas, I'm desperate?

using tversity and it works a treat. The only thing I don't like is that I have to start it manually each time I put on my pc even though It should start automatically. Don't know what that's about?

Re: XP Media Sharing in WMP 11 problem

Not sure if this thread is still going, but it did get me started and I found a solution.

This worked for me with a Denon ASD-51N, Denon AVR-890, and Windows XP Pro SP3.

Note: Anything in your Windows Media Player 11 playlists will show up in your media server. You might what to clean these up or delete them before you start adding folders to your shared folders.

1. Install Denon ASD-51N as per supplied directions.
2. Setup network as per on ASD-51N as per supplied instructions.
3. On computer with Microsoft Windows XP Pro SP3 install Windows Media Player 11.
4. Pick the following buttons: Start => Settings => Control Panel => Administrative Tools => Services => SSDP Discovery Service => General tab.
5. Make sure "Startup type:" is set to "Manual" and the "Service status:" is "Started".
6. Press "OK" and scroll down to "Universal Plug and Play Device Host" and double click on it.
7. Make sure "Startup type:" is set to "Manual" and the "Service status:" is "Started".
8. Press "OK" and close all windows.
9. Open Windows Media Player 11.
10. Pick the "Library" button at the top of Windows Media Player 11 and then "More Options..." in the pulldown menu.
11. Pick the "Library" tab and pick "Configure Sharing...".
12. Pick the device you want to share your media on and make sure the "Share my media to:" radio button is checked.
13. Pick the "OK" button.
14. Pick the "Monitor Folders..." button on the "Library" tab.
15. Pick the "Add..." button and browse to the folder that contains the media you want to share then press the "OK" button.
16. The "Add files to the library..." should start scanning. When the Progress changes to "Search completed", press the "Close" button.
17. Go to the Denon ASD-51N and pick the the "Network" button then the "Media Server" button.
18. Your computer should show up and you can browse through your media and play it.

Good Luck!

Re: XP Media Sharing in WMP 11 problem

I know that this thread is very old but the last post by bottleneck70 was the only one that I have found anywehere on the internet that has the exactly the same problem and hardware config that I have, i.e. XP with SP3 and a Denon ASD-51.
However, I've followed everything in the post and it still hasn't worked for me. I can see the Denon media player on my XP machine but I just can't see the XP machine on the Denon. I also have Windows 7 laptop which the Denon can see, even though I haven't authorised it to share.
I've tried almost everything but I'm just going round in circles (and pulling my hair out!!).
i would be grateful for any help that anyone can give... Denon don't seem to have any support pages, although this is getting to be quite a complex.

A very happy and prosperous new year to all who may read this...

Re: XP Media Sharing in WMP 11 problem

i was having the same original problem in this thread. i couldn't get windows media player to share. i tried everything stated above but nothing worked. here's how i fixed it. hopefully this will help somewhat for those trying to connect other devices.

**note: the SSDP and universal plug and play services are both set to start type: manual**

control panel>> administrative tools>> services>> windows media player network sharing service>> right click>> properties>>

select "start type: automatic". then click apply. after that click "start" and "ok."

open windows media player>> library options>> check the "share my media to:" box.

now just wait for it to load and you should see whatever device you are attempting to connect to (assuming it's turned on). you also may need to reboot your computer. now you shouldn't get the error:

"The Universal Plug and Play Device Host service on Local Computer started
and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they have no work to
do, for example, the Performance Logs and Alerts service."

and windows media player will finally start sharing... hopefully

Re: XP Media Sharing in WMP 11 problem

Hi brizzleb33,
thanx for your help. Unfortunately, I already had those options set, but for good measure, I stopped and restarted them, still no success. Restarted the computer as well. As I didn't know where the issue is, I relocated the problem PC next to the actual dock, and plugged the PC directly into the same router (BT HomeHub) where the Denon dock is plugged into. Still not working. At least doing this has ruled out the mains Devolo's that I use. I am now convinced that it is purely a XP issue. Either of my Windows7 machines are seen by the dock and after authorising them, I can play any (limited) media that reside on them. However, my daughters machine also runs XP and even though it sees the Denon dock, and you can authorise it to share media to, the dock just doesn't see it at all. And therefore the only common denominator is XP?
Can anyone help me please, I have spent so much time on this.

Re: XP Media Sharing in WMP 11 problem

hmm... it could be a lot of different things. honestly the easiest fix would be to use something other than windows media player to share. i have used vuze in the past with my xbox, so i know it works on xp. not sure if it works with the Denon though... but there are other programs out there as well. if you choose that route i'd be interested to know what you end up using for future reference.
