Error getting DRM Machine ID

Hi. I am trying to listen to an Overdrive protected audio file from a
local public library.

When I try opening the ODM file in Overdrive Media Console, for
delivery of the full media file, I get the error

Error 0xC00D2781: A problem has occurred in retrieving the Digital
Rights Management machine identification. Contact Microsoft Product
Support.

I get the same error (without the hex number) when I try, from OMC, to
get the "Security Upgrade" for WMP.

I am using XP Home on a Compaq Presario V5210us, WMP11, IE7 (but with
Mozilla 2.0.0.3 set as the default browser)

I didn't have any problem downloading a book using Adobe Reader 7. (I
don't care for the standalone flash-based reader which goes with Adobe
Reader 8.)

Digital Rights Management machine identification

I'm having the same problem--error code 0xC0002781. I tried following Prash's instructions, but can't find a folder in Documents and Settings labeled DRM. I've downloaded the Overdrive Media Console program and the Windows Media Player 11, but haven't been able to use the program because I run into the error code and the non-functioning "upgrade" button every time I try to do the security upgrade.

Same problem here

I have tried everything that Overdrive has suggested and still no luck. My
computer won't let me change the name of the DRM fil - says it's protected
and Overdrive just keeps telling me to do that and tries to give me different
ways to get it changed. I've tried going through the links others have
shared on here and never get the "upgrade complete" button to fill in. It
says it is completed but it never fully completes.
I have several books waiting for me and I can't download them!
Any other ideas out there?

You need to go to Windows Explorer and under Tools you need to go to Folder Options and select View All Files and Folders. Then you will be able to find the folder you are looking for. It's a hidden file. This worked perfect for me.

Step by Step… Here we go…

1. Open Windows Explorer
2. Select Tools
3. Select Folder Options
4. Select the View tab
5. Select Show hidden files and folders
6. Select Apply then OK
7. Go to My Computer (still in Windows Explorer)
8. Go to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users

Here you should now see the DRM folder from here on follow the instructions as told before. Change the file name to DRM.old and rerun Windows Media Player Security Upgrade in the OverDrive Media Console.

Security Upgrade Problems

When I go to any of the websites listed below, the "Upgrade" button is grayed out and doesn't work. How can I get it to work?
I had to go to 'Tools' > 'Manage Add-ons' > 'Enable or Disable Add-ons' and enable the add-ons. I'm not sure which ones you need, but I just enabled them all. Then it worked for me. It installed and now I can download with OverDrive!

Thanks for that link!

RE: Error getting DRM Machine ID

Per Tony, I have tried this link
and the *Upgrade* button is greyed out for me as well.

Per crystalbtrfly07, I've tried enabling all of the add-ons. All are
enabled. Still grey *Upgrade* button.

Per prash.nu, I've browsed to the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users and
found no DRM folder.

Per dane2005, I've verified that the *Show hidden files and folders* has
been selected. Still no DRM folder.

I've searched for *drm* in *Documents and Settings* and found only
drmv2lic.bak in C:\Documents and Settings\deke13\My Documents\My
Music\License Backup. No help there.

So, is it my system? I'm running XP Service Pack 3 and Windows Media Player
11.

RE: Error getting DRM Machine ID

AHA! I found the problem. Not only do you need to follow the steps listed
by dane2005 (see below step 5a I added), but you also need to uncheck the
*Hide protected operating system files*.

Now you can find the DRM directory and rename it to DRM.old

Then, launch Overdrive, go to tools>Windows Media Player Security Upgrade,
and everything works fine.

Re: Error getting DRM Machine ID

Here are some more details that are missing in previous postings:

Error Message regarding Digital Rights Management machine identification

Error OXCOOD2781 problem retrieving Digital Rights Management machine identification. Contact Microsoft product support.

Please make sure to follow each step carefully.

1. Open the “Control Panel”.

2. Open “Folder Options” and select the “View” tab.

3. Select “Show hidden files and folders”.

4. Un-check “Hide protected operating system files”.

5. In the warning message you receive, click “Yes”.

6. Click “OK”.

7. Close the Control Panel.

8. Rename the DRM folder to DRM.old.

Depending on your OS, it can be found in different locations: - Windows 2000 and XP: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\ DRM - Windows 98: C:\Windows\All Users\DRM - Windows ME: C:\Windows\DRM

9. Close this window and open OverDrive Media Console.

10. Go to “Tools > Windows Media Player Security Upgrade”. If it will not run from the OverDrive Media Console, the security upgrade may also be run by going to (in Internet Explorer only) the following site: http://drmlicense.one.microsoft.com/Indivsite (Please make sure to have Javascript and ActiveX enabled as well.)

11. Attempt to download an OverDrive Audio Book.

you might try
navigate to C:\documents and settings\all users
turn off hidden files and rename the folder DRM to DRM.old
use TOOLS/FOLDER OPTIONS/VIEW to show hidden files
(if you have music files etc. I'd guess they would lose their rights, I'd
guess you'll be able to go back and change it back to just DRM and restore
those settings.)

Re: Error getting DRM Machine

I have a new computer running Windows 7 64 with WMP 12. tried all of the above, finally hit the jackpot after following suggestions re: renaming DRM folder, disabling fire wall AND (in internet explorer tools), enabling Windows Media Player add-ons (seems like a given but........... might help someone else!!). Now to see if it actually works!

Re: Error getting DRM Machine ID

DRM is the digital write media protection technology which does not allows you to copy data of original disk. It is annoying sometime. There are certain tools that can remove it. You can download DRM Removal utility. It is freely available on internet. Just run the tool and then check back. You can also try to use many converters which are equipped with DRM removal service to convert the disc files to run in your regular pc.

Hello. I discovered a simpler and shorter way of fixing the greyed out button problem. I tried opening using Internet Explorer (as my default browser is Firefox, wont work on chrome or opera as well) and it solved the problem. Hope this helps.
