Re: Microsoft MPEG-1 (50) Codec Missing

I had the same problem. WMP cannot play one mp3 file, it can play all the others. So of course the problem is with the mp3 file itself, not with WMP or Vista. I checked the faulty "mp3" file with MediaInfo and GSpot codec information tools that came along with K-Lite codec pack. The file was actually mpeg1/mpeg2 format. Renaming the bad .mp3 extension to the correct extension .mp2 or .mpa will solve the problem

You can do one of two things.

A) Change the file format from .mp3 to .mp2 but this causes WMP to not
recognize it as music.

-----------------OR--------------

B) You could change the file format to .WMA the standard Windows Media File.
This not only allows WMP to play the file but allows it to recognize the file
as a music file and add it to your library.

About what?

Could someone explain to my WHY this works?
WMP cannot recognize what format it is since it has a .mp3 extension. It should be using the already available mpeg codec for differrent extensions(.avi, .mpg, .mpeg, etc.). MP2 is the audio version of DVD format mpeg2 video/audio.
