No sound on streaming video with WMP10/11 -- Video ok

I've recently got a problem getting sound from streaming sites associated
with WMP. This started with WMP10 -- upgraded to 11 (maybe not a good idea)
-- no change. This appears true for all sites (cnn, bbc etc)

Two example links:
mms://broadcast2.globeinteractive.com/robvod/media/2007/02/08/robtvhigh_304x228_143kbps_BGMILOGGER3_1170939570.w mv
Video is fine -- just no sound -- no error messages
When I run this in old Classic player works ok

http://stream.sri.ca/asx/asxgen.php?mount=cfrb
Here no sound -- no errors -- displays names etc ok
Again ok in Old Classic

Have tried copying addresses to full WMP -- no difference with the plugin
Mute is not set
WMP plays local avi, wmv, mpg files with all sorts of codecs and DRM quite
happily
Other streams (eg. youtube -- macromedia, real work ok) in browsers.
Have tried with FF, IE6, Netscape 8 -- same problem
All boxes are ticked for MMS Protocols (tried with & without 7000-7007
checked -- no proxies in WMP 11
Tried with Norton switched off
Only plugin in WMP is Nero and its switched off

Also, local video ASF files work ok but some purely audio ASF start then
just stop -- they use Microsoft Audio Codec 16 kbps, 16 kHz, mono

Does anyone know a workaround for this -- or what system file is involved?
Or at least how to change the plugins to the classic player rather than
WMP11 -- if there is a classic plugin?

Would going back to WMP10 be preferred? If so is there a source for the last
version of 10?
Thank you kindly for your advice

RE: No sound on streaming video with WMP10/11 -- Video ok

Rolled back to WMP 10.
Tried all the same things I attempted before -- same problem -- so this is
not a WMP 11 problem specifically
Then tried installing codec pack all in 1 6.0.3.0 on top of everything (I
already had similar packs installed and reinstalled before).
It didn't exactly install cleanly (some files it couldn't modify)
But after reboot -- sound is back -- crazy!
Maybe the uninstalls / installs just flipped the order of the codecs or
something....
Any ideas?

I haven't thoroughly checked if all this has screwed something else up. I'll
see how long it lasts.

(If I was really brave, I'd try installing WMP11 again!! -- I think not!!)
Thx

RE: No sound on streaming video with WMP10/11 -- Video ok

WMP no longer supports mms. Even though they published support for mms
previously on their website, support was removed in WMP 11.

That's a bit odd considering we're still stuck with 200x200 pixel album art
because they had previously published that the limit would be there and can't
change it now.

Same situation but different behavior from the Windows Media Player product
team. Weird.

Don't try WMP 11 if you need access to mms. It isn't supported.

It's supported as a rollover protocol... there's some doc on the MS web site
that covers the wrinkles here.

Red herring - if he's getting video at all, WMP supports the protocol being
served up by the server. =)

The MMS URL here correctly rolls over to the supported HTTP implementation
from the 9.1 media server being used here.

There've been a couple reports around here of audio failing when the player
is embedded... what sound card do you have with what exact driver version?
Does switching to waveOut:

help... ?

(And for what it's worth, this works fine on my systems... there's some
uniqueness about your system that would be good to identify/undo. It
shouldn't be directly-player-related since WMP doesn't do much box-specific
stuff, although WMP does let you specify the audio output selection in WMP's
Tools:Options:Devices:Speakers.)

Re: No sound on streaming video with WMP10/11 -- Video ok

Thanks for the info.
I'm going to look into the sound card drivers etc. -- but they've never
given me problems before.
Sounds like this works ok for others with WMP11 -- so its something screwy
at my end.
(I'm P5GD1-VM -- Realtek ALC861 DirectX 9.0 5.10.0.5026 -- not the latest --
but never problem before).
Read something almost identical to my problem with WMP10 so maybe it's just
a driver corruption somewhere.
Anyway, since its stable and working again in WMP10 (for the moment anyway),
the urgency if off.

Thanks to Dale and zachd

Re: No sound on streaming video with WMP10/11 -- Video ok

I have reinstalled my XP to a newer bigger disk and suddenly
discovered it developed this symptom as well.

WMP10 can play my mp3 and wma files, but it doesn't play audio in
streams like e.g. Deutsche Welle live feeds (www.dw-world.de), both
radio (completely mite) and tv (video plays, no audio). It doesn't
metter if I try playing the stream in embedded player or not.

The same stream, e.g. http://metafiles.gl-systemhaus.de/dw/radio_en_50.asx
plays just fine in mplayer2 or winamp.

I tried reinstalling WMP10 and it didn't help.

This same system with ~same software/drivers used to play these
streams ok before disk upgrade/reinstallation.

Sorry I was away for a while
I'm not sure what worked but installing the codec pack all in 1 6.0.3.0 on
top of everything (and getting an error or two) and rebooting was the last
thing I did before it started working again.
Something must have got corrupted somehow.
I haven't yet tried going back to WMP11
Good luck

Codec Pack All In One qualifies as horrible software. The Stream Switcher
there causes an absolutely absurd number of crashes.

Re: No sound on streaming video with WMP10/11 -- Video ok

It is nice to find others with the same problem - hopefully some solutions
will show up. This may be the No Mono Sound issue being reported by some
here:
http://forums.techguy.org/multimedia...ows-media.html

So far, no one in the other discussion and this discussion has solved the
problem without putting in a third party codec pack, which I'm reluctant to
do except as a last resort. Strangely, dropping back to version 10 does not
solve for others - I have not tried yet.
