Cannot play WMV files if DirectX is installed!!!

I had recently reinstalled Windows XP and having some problems with it. If I am playing any mpg or wmv file then the system will slow down and the video becomes unplayable. It seems like the screen mode is changing when the window flashes back. I have also installed the latest service pack 2 and DirectX version on my pc. Can anyone suggest what to do here? thanks

Have you tried to disable the graphics hardware acceleration:
  1. Click Start button and then type personalization in the Start Search box, and then click Personalization in the Programs list.
  2. Click Display Settings.
  3. Click Advanced Settings.
  4. Click the Troubleshoot tab, and then click Change settings.
  5. User Access Control permission
  6. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.
  7. Move the Hardware Acceleration slider two notches to the left of Full (the Disable cursor and bitmap accelerations setting).
  8. Click OK, and then click Restart Now.
  9. After the computer has restarted, test the game.

Some programs run very slowly—or not at all—unless Microsoft DirectDraw or Direct3D hardware acceleration is turned on. To determine this, click the Display tab, and then under DirectX Features, check to see whether DirectDraw, Direct3D, and AGP Texture Acceleration appear as Enabled. If not, try turning on hardware acceleration.
  1. Open Screen Resolution by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, and then, under Appearance and Personalization, clicking Adjust screen resolution.
  2. Click Advanced settings.
  3. Click the Troubleshoot tab, and then click Change settings. If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
  4. Move the Hardware Acceleration slider to Full.
