| Re: WPM11 Final - can't share files off network folders anymore? (
Great tip. Definitely what I would classify as a simplification over WMP 10. Now users have to edit the registry to configure WMP. Nice job, Windows Media Player product team! Couldn't get any simpler than that. | Re: WPM11 Final - can't share files off network folders anymore? (
I just read the article at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win...ng.mspx#q20_17. This is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard for sharing files! You purchase Windows with file sharing capabilities, or even a server edition designed for file sharing and yet you can't use those file sharing capabilities for WMP 11? You have to either enable access to a single user account only or enable anonymous access (a HUGE security risk!) not only to the files but also to the server registry???? What in the world is the Windows Media Player product team thinking? What is the real goal of blocking access to remote libraries? Another means of DRM? Are they saying I can't have all my media on one PC and access that library from wherever in the house I may be working? That's an absolutely absurd interpretation and enforcement. I am becoming of the opinion that the Windows Media Player product team didn't consider users at all in the design of WMP 11. They didn't build it for users; they built it for DRM. | Re: WPM11 Final - can't share files off network folders anymore? (
I take it back. Adding the EnableRemoteContentSharing=1 registry key does fix the problem, but the link given above is worded wrong and tells you to add the key on the "computer that contains the library being shared". Here is the full extract:- "You can enable remote content sharing by performing the following procedure on the computer that contains the library you are sharing" Even though it made no sense I tried it on the SOURCE computer (thought it might be using some strange protocol that got enabled), but obviously it made no difference. I would suggest that the Microsoft webpage be amended to read correctly otherwise a lot of people are going to go throught this headache. | Re: WPM11 Final - can't share files off network folders anymore? (
Thanks for the help Neil, much appreciated. After further testing, it turns out that the EnableRemoteContentSharing key is totally irrelevant and unecessary, and I suspect it only relates to HOSTING a shared media library, not USING a remote library shared by another computer. I have found that if I use F3 immediate after opening WMP11 the search works fine, but any subsequent uses of F3 or the MENU/TOOLS/OPTIONS/MONITOR FOLDERS route do not actually search the folders! Closing WMP11 and reopening, the search works again. Defintely looks like a BUG to me, and it's taken me hours to find it. I also have a couple of other problems so here's the list in case you have a quick answer:- 1) Still need the Search problem above sorted 2) I cannot add or play MOV, MP4, M4v. The codecs are on the PC, and Zune plays them .... This seems to be a problem only with running on Vista, since WMP11 on XP works OK 3) I have no FILE TYPES tab running under Vista Zune just does not have the functionality of WMP11 otherwise I'd just use that. Hope you have some easy solutions. | Re: WPM11 Final - can't share files off network folders anymore? ( XP doesn't have the underlying networking support to properly/fully handle sharing PC-to-PC. Vista does. So if you go the other way, it'll work great. Sorry - it wasn't really possible to update XP's networking layer here to fix this. =\ -Zach -- Speaking for myself only. | Re: WPM11 Final - can't share files off network folders anymore? ( This whole scenario sucks. There's a reason why it was ran away from. You can turn it on via a doc note because it is tough and it's not going to work 100% due to all sorts of cute issues that just aren't really solvable within any limited timeframe. You need to focus on what works: this is an area fraught with problems/peril. WMP does not need a Share My Media switch that randomly changes file sharing privileges on a remote share, and the other options are equally painful. It's got nothing to do with DRM. In case it isn't clear, nobody really likes DRM. It has a purpose in life, but ... *shrug* It's just kind of a necessary evil until that magic point at which there's some global licensing solution and no piracy. Bill Gates spoke on that pretty recently, though, so ... refer to those comments, I guess. It sucks. Let's move on. =) -Zach -- Speaking for myself only. While I dislike DRM, I also have posted that there would be no DRM had billions of copyrighted songs not been downloaded without paying for them. I believe it is the right of copyright owners to protect their property. Neither the music industry or Microsoft pushed DRM before that. My problem isn't with DRM, it's with the piss-poor reliability of non-DRM features because of the effort put into DRM, and the piss-poor reliability of DRM costing honest customers money when they can't use their files. Though I do wish the US Federal Government would force an open standard for DRM so that no single provider of media can dominate the market. That said, I have a Windows 2003 server that my wife rips all our CDs at (using iTunes). My Media Center 2005 PC points to the server for all of its media and I don't have any problem with that at all. So how come, suddenly, WMP 11 can't add music from a network path to the library? This is not a technical issue so it must be a marketing issue.
