| Rename TITLES, not FILENAMES, all at once. WMP11
I have my MP3 files named ARTIST-SONGTITLE. The song titles are the same. Therefore, the artist name is included in the songtitle in the Now Playing list and Library Title column. I would like to change the song titles to just the SONGTITLE, while leaving the filename as is. Does anyone know how to do this for approximately 4000 songs? |

You need a tagger with scripting options. try MP3Tag |

Media player should be able to handle this for you. It's key to know 2 things : The song title (when ripping from CD) can be partly customised, and WMP can rename tracks to match that naming convention. Below the Rip tab, click the small dropdown menu and choose More Options. From there, click File Name... and set it to use just Song Title. Now, head to the Library tab, again click More Options on the dropdown menu, and check "Rearrange music in rip music folder using rip music settings", as well as "Rename music files using rip music settings" Between those 2 settings, your songs should start to be renamed (might take some time to complete as oyu can imagine with 4000 songs) HTH Cheers - Neil ------------------------------------------------ Digital Media MVP : 2004-2009 http://mvp.support.microsoft.com/mvpfaqs |

I have not tried using WMP11 to rename files as described. It seems rather awkward and subject to change on the next revision. I recommend MP3Tag. I'm an IT professional and former engineer. It can extract filename information separated by delimiters into field information and create filenames based on field names. The interface can take a little while to figure out but the scripting is straightforward. It allows you to preview your changes before committing to permanent change, which is handy for figuring out the various functions. Of course, the delimiters have to be in the right place. I use a shareware program called "The Rename" which can do things like put an underscore between the 10th and 11th characters of the filename, starting from left or right. It also does search and replace which is great from when you get those files that come with the artist name misspelled. When you are doing 400 files at a time, it's the only way to go. |
