Unable to play any mp3 or mp4 files in WMP 11 (vista)

Hey there! Lately I have been facing a problem with WMP and it's really
bothering me.

Everytime I try to play any music or videos I get an error:

Er is een probleem opgetreden tijdens het afspelen van het bestand. Klik op
Help op het web voor extra assistentie.

This is Dutch and it means as much as: An error has occured while playing
the file. Click on "Help on the Web" for more assistance.

When I do this, I go to the following page:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win...nalid=887C0032

According to this page, either my sound driver isn't updated or there is
some problem with my sound anyhow. Well youtube works just fine, and as far
as I know my computer installs updates every day.

When I go to the Windows Update page it says I'm not the administrator so
I'm not allowed to install any updates. However, there is only one account on
my computer, and this is the administrator.

So now I'm stuck, and I need your help. It became a bit of a long story, but
hopefully it is detailed enough for you to help me.

WMP Version 11.0.6000.6349
Windows Vista Home Premium

A: MP4 files aren't supported natively in WMP11. That is new functionality
in WMP12. In WMP11, you would have had to download some third party filter
to play 'em. What filter did you download?

B: Error 0x887C0032 is AEERR_TRANSACTION_MUST_BE_COMMITTED . Does
dxdiag.exe when run report any errors?

C: Update to Windows Vista Service Pack 1. If that does not work, something
is wrong with your computer unrelated to Windows Media Player. =\
