C00D2AFB at WMP11 install

I'm trying to install WMplayer 11 on my wife's xp home computer. From manual install of downloaded (from MS) program, I get 87% finished then 'cannot be completed error code is C00D2afb, and original error is 0x80070005.
I have attempted to follow directions on zachd's page, renamed the wmplayer.ocx and ocx7 files, rebooted and tried to install...no.

Greetings kraigk,

I also have the same problem and have yet to find an answer. Been at it for
several months now in fact. I have the exact same error codes [80070005 and
C00D2AFB] and I cannot fix it to save my butt. What good are specific error
codes if there are no answers or fixes.

All you smart folks help us out if you can.

OK, I have achieved my task...windows media player 11 installed and running! SM...as you were the only reply and have the same problem, here's what did it for me. Hopefully it'll help at your end.I couldn't change the registry keys from the updspapi.log but could find the one I wanted to change. It was the HKLM\software\microsoft\mediaplayer\settings\mp3encoding\lowrate . I finally logged on in safe mode as the adminstrator. Then in regedit I could delete the HKEY CLASSES ROOT\WMPlayer.OCX and .OCX7 files and then renamed the HKLM.........lowrate mentioned above. I rebooted back to normal (not safe mode) and voila! Going back to the regedit, I found that the renamed file was still there (I was planning to change the name back to what it had been) and that it was still renamed but another file identical to that one I renamed had been added.
I also found that I couldn't seem to log on as administrator except in safe mode. At the 'change user' in the 'log off' tab, all I could see was the log in for my wife, no administrator. Always something new to learn I suppose.

Tried the suggestions from your site and followed with interest kraigk's
work. I still can't get the damn thing to work. Should you look through
this and see any obvious issues that I could fix that would be great. If not
thanks for all the other advice that you have provided.

Any suggestions on a wmp11 replacement would be nice too however it works
fine on my netbook.

Thanks for the kind response. Tried your ideas and zachd's still got
nothing. I sent my logs to zachd. I've spent more time trying to fix this
than anything I have ever done computer wise. Very frustrating. I am
looking for a wmp 11 alternative.

This one is fairly ""easy"" - delete the registry key:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\Settings\MP3Encoding\LowRate
It's evidently corrupt on your system. Some bogus 3rd party app probably
set permissions on it incorrectly. =\

Kraigk,

Thanks for all of your and zachd's help. I got so pissed that I just walked
away for several days and came back at it today. If you asked me to repeat
how I did I do not think I could as I was in places I have never been nor do
I ever wish to return. But Happy Puppy Poop it works!

Thanks very much for all of your help. Between you and kraigk I finally got
it done. I'm not sure I could replicate what I did nor do I ever wish to
return into the scary world of the regedit but thanks to you guys I can stop
messing around. WMP11 is installed and Buddy Rich is playing as I type.
