Windows Media Player Error Message Need Help

I am currently running Win Vista Home Prem SP1, Win Media Player 11 x64
on Asus Laptop, N80vb/N80vm.
When I try to open a file with ext. wmv, I get the following error message:

Windows Media player can not play file. Player might not support file type
or codec to compress file.
You've encountered error message C00D1199 while using Windows Media Player.
The following information might help you troubleshoot the issue.
Original Error Code/ Original Error Message
80040265 Cannot play back the file. The format is not supported.

Any suggestions on how to fix this?

In WMP,click on HELP,select the option to go on-line to WMP error message
page.
