WMP11 crashes as soon as I go into the Video library

I can open WMP 11 just fine. I'm using Vista Home Premium. But as soon as I
go into the Video Library, it crashes and has to close.

I've tried turning off the folders that it was monitoring, because i thought
maybe there was something wrong with a file in my library, but it looks like
it's still trying to load thumbnail previews of all the videos and that's
right when it crashes. I was going to try switching to the list view instead
of thumbnail view but I can't click that button before it crashes. I'm not
even entirely sure if that's the problem.

Is there any way to reset WMP11 to it's default settings when it was
installed so that it forgets about my library?

What third party codecs/filters did you install?

What are the fault details for that crash according to "View Problem
Historys" in the Problem Reports and Solutions control panel?

RE: WMP11 crashes as soon as I go into the Video library

Nevermind. I was able to solve the issue by renaming the folder where it was
monitoring the video files, after that i was able to load the video library
in wmp and then i was able to delete the video files from the library. wmp
does not crash anymore after doing this.

Re: WMP11 crashes as soon as I go into the Video library

I've had it once or twice before - like Zach said, a defective video
decoder is usually the cause. Actually it was always the case that
when viewing the video thumbnail in the library, that WMP crashed (WMP
can generate thumbnails on the fly from the files from what I can
tell, rather than storing a known-good JPEG of the file as a thumb)

I worked out which file was faulty, and removed it but unfortunately
didn't document the file decoder used ;-(

Once I'd removed the file (unlike you I didn't remove the entire
folder) WMP was good to go in the library view.

Cheers - Neil

Re: WMP11 crashes as soon as I go into the Video library

I had already uninstalled all third party codecs such as divx and xvid from
the machine to try to rule that out. This is the error details from the crash:

I've already got it working as in my second post above, but let me know if
anything you see here give you an idea of what might have been the original
problem

Yeah, that one is actually really obvious - ad2mpegin.dll is crashing. I
think that's an Adobe file?

Anyways, there's your problem...
