Windows Media Player cannot find the file

I have windows media player version 11.0.5721.5230 and XP Home SP3. I have
media store on a 500Gb external hard disk that is connected to the computer
via a usb connection. I have added media to Windows Media player and the
icons appear in player. When I click on the icon for the picture I want to
display I get the message "Windows Media Player cannot find the file. If you
are trying to play, burn, or sync an item that is in your library, the item
might point to a file that has been moved, renamed, or deleted". The data
has not been moved renamed or deleted. I had the same prblem previously and
solved it by moving the music to my internal hard disk. This is now full so
I have to use the external usb connected disk. Can I access media stored on
my external usb connected hard disk?

I've just had the same problem...albeit with a much smaller hard drive. I
know it sounds stupid but you have to make sure that the device has gone
through the "autoplay" sequence before opening the media player. It can't
cope with something new being added once it is open, the library can't cope
with it.

Hope this soves your problem.

Can you play them directly from the USB drive still (as opposed to starting
them within the player)?
