.avi files

Hi, when I try to play an .avi video file, I only get audio - no images on
screen. I've downloaded Windows Media Player 11 and this is still a problem.

This is probably a DiVX format video. If it was downloaded from one of the
Usenet binary groups it almost certainly is.

In that case, you need the (free) DiVX codec. You can get it here:

http://www.divx.com/divx/windows/

You just need the codec--not all the other stuff they try and push onto you.

A useful utility is GSpot, a free utility that analyzes videos and tells you
what codecs you have/need to play them:

What does GSpot say about the video?

Re: .avi files

In GSpot under Stream Type, it says the avi file is not supported but under
the Video section it says there are 2 compatible codecs installed. I clicked
to render it and GSpot then rendered it 'successfully' but I still can't play
the file.

Does the actual filename end in .AVI ?

Normally, "Not supported" in GSpot means it's an MPEG4 (.mp4 or .m4v)
or a small selection of stuff which GSpot can read but doesn't
guarantee to read.

Hi Neil,

Yes, the file name ends in avi. Any ideas?

Thanks.

Re: .avi files

That's not the actual question, in a way. The thought is that the file is
misidentifying itself as an "AVI" when in fact it's a ".mp4" file. Where
did you get the file from? If it's at some URL, it would be fairly easy to
check the file format.

Re: .avi files

I've been having the same problem playing ".avi" files with WMP. When i click
"Properties" on the file it tells me it's avi and under summary it said UNDER
Image----Width 640 pixels----Height 272----UNDER Audio----Duration
1:53:05----Bit Rate 156kbps----Audio format MPEG Layer-3----UNDER
Video----Frame rate 23 frames/second----Data rate 105kbps.

i hope this info will help with our problem.

Re: .avi files

You didn't mention anything about a video codec there.

If the sound is heard but there's no video, often it's going to be a
downloaded AVI with DivX video encoding, so you'd need to at least try
this http://www.divx.com/divx/windows/codec/ which is a pain free way
to sort about 50% of those AVIs without doing much codec checking

(50% chance of getting it running is an improvement if it means we
don't have to keep gong round this Q & A loop !)
