why does WMP not play DVD's?

Windows is a fairly sophisticated operating system.
I paid good money for XP Pro.

Why do I have a "media player" that never plays media properly?

It's either "looking for codec" or "codec unknown" or simply audio with no
picture.

VLC Media Player plays them all.

What's up, Microsoft?

Why do I have to become a technical wizard and download unknown "codec
packs" from unknown 3rd party vendors to make this sophisticated operating
system do what it should already be doing?

it plays everything that WMP SHOULD play, and more.
it'll also play video and audio cd file systems from HD

interesting.
still no reply why WMP is so lame.

Re: why does WMP not play DVD's?

I thought distribution of DVD codecs wasn't free per the MPEG Licensing
Authority - it'd be interesting to check with VLC to see how they're
handling that.

As regards DVD playback on XP, there are actual DVD playback packs
available-
