Windows Media Player 11, Video stutters and skips

Specs;
Motherboard: Asus A7V333
Processor: AMD Athlon (TM) XP 2200+ 1.35 GHz. 1 GB of Ram
Windows XP Professional: Version 2002, Service Pack 2
Windows Media Player 11: version 11.05.5721.5145
Video Card NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200: 256mb Version 4.34.20.69.51

MY QUESTION: The last several days, all of my video playback on Windows
Media Player 11 plays back with a stutter or skip. This problem started about
5 days ago. Before that time, everything seemed to work ok. I have
un-installed and re-installed all the codecs that I can think about. I will
admit I am not familiar with codecs. Meaning I am not a pro at this stuff.
This happens with AVI, MPEG's and WMV files. Can someone help or provide a
solution to my problem?

All ~your~ video : Do you mean playback from your local hard disk ?
When was the last time you did a defragement on the disk ?

Also make sure your FX5200 has up to date graphics card drivers - I
think the last version was from 09/10/2006 - version 9.6.8.5 according
to exactly that device I have on my Vista PC (device manager ->
display -> driver)

Since I have your graphics card I can definitely say video playback in
WMP works without issue with that card on an Athlon 2300 in 768MB RAM,
and it should be even less resource intensive on XP (no Aero
interface).

The only stuff I have problems with are high-def (1080p) videos, which
exceed the capabilties of the machine. Do DVDs playback OK ?

The "List" isn't actually a web page, it's a newsgroup. So posting
here doesn't bump anything, it just adds to the noise - freiendly
advice ;-)

I'm using free agent newsgroup reader, which tracks and marks messages
on the newsgroup I'm following, so it's not necessary to bump stuff
cos I'll see it (eventually, when I have time !)
