WMP11 not playing any videos...blank screen with only audio.

Hello,

Windows Media Player has never worked on my new laptop. It is version number
11.0.5721.5230. My computer system is Microsoft Winows XP Media Center
Edition 2005 [Version 2002] Service Pack 2.

I will click on something to start playing a video, and WMP will come up and
all I will get is a black screen and I can only hear the audio on the video.
I have downloaded all updates possible from Microsoft, including Article
900325 and Article 925766 as recommended on the WMP Troubleshooting website.
There are no more possible updates when I go to Windows Update.

Has anyone else encountered this problem or know the solution? I'm having a
very hard time getting anyone at Microsoft to help me with this problem, and
I haven't found any other threads from anyone with this specific problem.

I have the same problem. Only mine used to work. An interesting twist. If I
view a .jpg file in windows photo gallery and then click the "next" button to
my mpeg file, it will play in very high quality-but only in windows photo
gallery. It is a completely black screen in windows media player. I even
purchased mpeg codec, that doesn't work either. Try to see if yours works in
photo gallery, too. Maybe we can get enough info to narrow down the problem.
Windows photo gallery will not play the file if I just say "open with" unless
I add the folder to it's library, but it will play the file if I click "Next"
first. Weird

Hi, my name’s Cody, and I’m working with the Windows Media Outreach Team to
help answer questions folks might have about their copies of Windows Media
Player.

Something that might be causing the problem, especially if your issue is
centralized around Windows Media Player alone, could be due to improper
codecs.

Instead of just randomly downloading codec packs with the hope that one of
them works, I’d recommend downloading a codec tool that will analyze your
particular video file and tell you exactly what codec(s) you’ll need to play
the files.

Here are a couple of free tools that will do this for you: Gspot
(http://www.headbands.com/gspot/) and Sherlock
(http://www.updatexp.com/sherlock-codec-detective.html) Both of these work
great, and using these on your particular file will tell you what codecs you
need to get a file running properly, without making you download anything
that you don’t need.

You might want to check out this page, as it gives you a great general
explanation of what exactly codecs do and how to find/use them:

Using GSpot found that the video codec used is WMV3, WMP v9. It appears that
Windows Media 11 has the codec installed.

The video plays in Vegas Movie Studio Platium 8.

Like a previous post the audio plays in Windows Media 11, but not video.

Also, it used to play video and suddenly stopped in the past few weeks.
Can't say exactly when because I do not play a lot of video.
