| Windows Media Player not playing files
I have created an AVI of a video taken off a video camera. It's been encoded to divx format. It is also PAL. I uploaded the file to my personal ftp site that my ISP provides. http://home.austarnet.com.au/mjt57/paris_trip_5.AVI I can play it using Windows Media Player "Classic" or Windows Media Player Ver. 11. Nero Showtime also plays it fine. I have sent the link to friends in the US. They are telling me that it won't play. Could someone have a look at this file and if you can't play it, please advise as to why? It's difficult to try and trouble shoot it from my end. The people who we sent the links to are not computer literate in the sense that they understand how to install codecs or trouble shoot such problems themselves. So it's been a frustrating exercise, so far. The original file, an mpg, was created using a digital camera, a Sony digital camera for photos, not a movie camera. I also have another problem. WMP cannot play the original file at my end. Rather I need to play it using either Apple Quicktime or Nero Showtime. If WMP opens it it only plays the audio which is clipped and full of static. No video is played. However, my main concern is getting the avi's to play for our US friends. Thanks. |

As you said, it's listed as DivX4 (made using "Super") It should be possible to render this using the native DivX codec from http://www.divx.com/divx/windows/codec/ but I tried and it failed. FFDShow is claimed to allow playback of this format, so I'd try (locally) the DivX codec above, and if that fails then try installing FFDShow from http://www.free-codecs.com/download/FFDshow.htm HTH Cheers - Neil ------------------------------------------------ Digital Media MVP : 2004-2008 http://mvp.support.microsoft.com/mvpfaqs |

Any idea as to why this would be? It has me totally bamboozled. If it can play on my bog stock windows based PC then why won't it play on any other PC? All that I can work out is that it may be a PAL/NTSC issue as the original videos were recorded in PAL format. But I thought that this was only for reproduction on televisions. I didn't know that PC monitors were either PAL or NTSC. Or that video cards were the same. > FFDShow is claimed to allow playback of this format, so I'd try > (locally) the DivX codec above, and if that fails then try installing > FFDShow from http://www.free-codecs.com/download/FFDshow.htm Are you suggesting that the people in America should install this? If you mean me then I already have it installed. |

DivX here? If only FFDShow Tryouts works to decode this, that sounds like a bug in the DivX decoder that you should take up with DivX support. Note that MPEG4-in-AVI is pretty much a mess. =P -- Speaking for myself only. See http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html for some helpful WMP info.
