The MTNL connection is connected to the desktop computer using Dlink ADSL 2+ router. I want to connect my laptop to same Internet connection and hence I bought a Dlink DIR 300 router which has wireless capability but I dont know how to connect it to the network. So I Need help in connecting Dlink DIR 300 router to Mtnl connection. Also I need to know if it is legal to share the connection. Any suggestions and solutions are welcome.

To know if the sharing of the same Internet connection on two or more computer is legal or not contact your Internet service provider. Many of the service provider allow the sharing of the same Internet connection on different computers while some of the ISP's do not allow the sharing of the connection. If the ISP's do not allow the sharing of the connection then there will be no use in implementing any hardware for sharing the connections as the ISP will block the sharing of connection. ISP's can do this if they are monitoring the Mac address of the computers which are connected to their connection.

To connect the Dlink DIR router to Dlink ADSL router you will have to follow these steps. The Dlink ADSL router must be used as the main router while the DLink DIR router should be used as Wireless access point. Connect the two routers using a straight ethernet cable as both the routers have self crossing ports. Now login to the Dlink DIR router and open the configuration page. In the configuration page, enable Wlan and select the encryption type and authentication password. After entering all the details disable DHCP and then log out. Now you will be able to connect to the Dlink DIR router using Wifi on the Laptop.

The two routers can also be connected as follows, As the Dlink ADSL router is a router/modem i.e it can perform both the functions hence it can be configured to be used in Bridge mode. When the DLINK ADSL router is used in Bridge mode, Dlink DIR router should be used as main router. Connect the DLink ADSL router to the computer using a Console cable. Login to the router and open the configuration page. In the configuration page, select the connection type as PPPoE and then enter all the details of the internet account which you are using. Disable the DHCP and then save the settings. Reboot the router. Now Connect the DLink DIR router to the computer using a Console cable. Login to the router and open the configuration page. In the configuration page, select the connection type as PPPoE and then enter all the details of the internet account which you are using. Enable the Wlan and DHCP on the router and then save the settings. Reboot the router. Now the DLINK ADSL router will act as Bridge while DLINK DIR router will work as Main router.

There is no need to connect any extra router to share the connection on both the computers. The DLINK ADSL router comes with two Ethernet ports which can be used to connect two computers to the same connection without any problems. Contact the ISP and get the static IP addresses for both the computers. Now connect both the computers to the router and then open the network connections window. Now right click on the LAN and select properties. Now in the TCP/IP properties, select the option which says "Select the following IP address" and then enter the IP address which is provided by the ISP. Enter the DNS and the default gateway which will also be provided by the ISP. Save and apply the settings. Now you will be able to share the connection without any problems.

If the Dlink DIR router has an DSL port then you can use only one router instead of using two routers. You will just have to configure the Dlink Dir router same as the Dlink ADSL router. Connect the ADSL router to the computer using a console cable and then login to the router. Go to the configuration TAB and then copy all the settings in a text file. Disconnect the router from the network and connect the DIR router to the computer using a console cable. Log in to the router by typing the default address of DIR router which is 192.168.0.1 in the address bar of the browser. It will prompt for User name and password. Provide correct information, now the system will take you to Configuration page. Here do all the settings as per the settings of the ADSL router by referring the text file. Do not forget to enable DHCP on the router. Once all the settings are done. Save the settings and connect the phone line connection to the DSL port of the router. Now disconnect the router from the computer and reboot it. If the configurations are proper, you will be able to access Internet on both the computers.
