Wifi phones need cell service plan

My friend has recently bought HTC mobile phone and i am trying to connect it to Wifi Connection and also try to connect it at my office i am able to connect my Wifi connection but when i am trying to surf internet i am not able to surf can anyone tell me what would be the issue or need to have cell service plan for access internet.

I am having AT&T connection with me and they are charging me for wifi service. According to my knowledge most of the places are not free you need to pay them. If you know any place where wifi is for free then try to make a new connection and have a check for the same.

If you want to use internet on your phone for that you would have to activate to a data service from your service provider. If you don't want to pay for that and happen to be in a wifi hotspot then you need to pay to the person who is providing you wifi connection because i guess nothing is for free.

It's entirely possible that the HTC phone needs to have the browser set to use a certain access point. Depends if it is Windows Mobile or something else.

You do NOT need to have an access plan if you plan to use WiFi. Only if you want to use GPRS or 3G on-the-go, which it sounds like is not the case.
