MTNL has announced the launch of 3G services in Mumbai today, which will be commercially available to existing and new subscribers June 1 onwards.
Kuldeep Singh, director (technical) of MTNL said 3G as technology supports both voice and data transfer and is increasing easy for roaming feature. He also said 3G is compatible with GSM SIM while Wi-Max mandates additional device. However, MTNL has not discarded Wi-Max and will look for its opportunities also as per the market and enterprise need, he said.
3G Services include wide-area wireless voice telephony, video calls, and broadband wireless data, all in a mobile environment. Additional features also include HSPA data transmission capabilities able to deliver speeds up to 14.4 Mbit/s on the downlink and 5.8 Mbit/s on the uplink.
Total investment for the 3G launch in Mumbai is Rs 250 crore and we hope to rope in one lakh customers by March next year.
Nokia said they are in plans to tie-up with MTNL to offer 3G enabled phones to MTNL's 3G customers, however no plans were officially released.
