The Aircel Group is a joint venture between Maxis Communications Berhad of Malaysia and Apollo Hospital Enterprise Ltd of India, with Maxis Communications holding a majority stake of 74%. Aircel, the telecom operator with 160 lakhs subscribers across India. Now Aircel will launch GSM Services in Mumbai coming April.
There exists a strong competition among the telecos in Mumbai (metro)
telecom circle. In the GSM segment, there are six major players – MTNL Dolphin,Vodafone, Airtel,BPL mobile, Idea and the latest edition of RCOM-GSM, which entered the arena in December 2008.
While in the CDMA segment, there's Tata Indicom, RCOM, MTNL's Garuda and Virgin Mobile. Keeping in view the expanding subscriber base in Mumbai, Aircel is likely to get only a small customer base initially.
The Company has currently gained a momentum in the space of telecom in India post the allocation of additional spectrum by the Department of Telecom, Govt. of India for 13 new circles across India. These include Delhi (Metro), Mumbai (Metro), Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Haryana, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra & Goa, Rajasthan, Punjab, UP (West) and UP (East).
