How to increase my pc speed & capacity?

Hi I have windows XP on service pack 3 and btbroadband. I have a desktop pc reformatted by friend but freeze when i use 2 or more proggie. Anyone know what is the problem? Checked For Virus & cleaned it.
Intel (R) Celeron(R) CPU 3GHz 512MB RAM
Disk Space Disk C: 50 GB Available, 74 GB Total, 70 GB Free
Maximum Capacity 2048 MBytes
I am an amateur with pc's.. please help
