Seems pretty good. The high end ones are more expensive cos of larger platter sizes. The Maxtor 300GB/16MB model looks really good.

I bought a Maxtor 250GB IDE 8mb cache on 27 Jan for 7900/- and today I bought a Maxtor SATA 160GB for 5000/- at Lamington Road - are your prices Delhi prices ? I thought Mumbai would have been cheaper than Delhi.

F.Y.I. Before I bought the Maxtor 250GB I had initially bought the Seagate 200GB (I had it for only one day) and had at first kept it in an external Rs 2500/- USB2 enclosure but with this setup I was getting some timeout messages when I moved data to this drive and I used to get file copy failed messages. I dont think my external case's HDD controller could handle this large drive - it handles my Hitachi 80GB without any problems. I then transferred the drive to my computer but was not too pleased with its performance and as the Maxtor 250GB Maxline Plus II is an Enterprise class drive it was no contest as far as I was concerned - it was Maxtor for me.

@ Richard and slightly OT

I am getting a 3.5 HDD enclosure (external, USB2) and plan to put a 80 GB HDD in it. Any tips about how to go about it? You are an experienced user.

Get the best enclosure you can find - I have seen some really pathetic enclosures and some nice ones. I have 3 of which one is a 2.5" self powered - this is small and fits in a shirt pocket and can handle upto a 80GB notebook hard disk - very convenient to carry around.

Format the drive in the case - I am from the old school of thought that said that drives work best when used on the controller used for formatting.

I have installed Win98SE on one of my external drives and I can boot from this drive.

Download this Freeware (thanks to PCB from THAT other forum ) Karen's Drive Replicator which does backups/synchronizing of drives - get it from.....

Seagate with its performance and 5 yr warranty its a no brainer. Samsung though their drives are not that good their service is nothing short of excellent.
