Western Digital Drives are considered to be among the best Hard Drives (stability + performance). Try getting one with 8 MB cache and 7200 RPM for the best performance. However, it will be costlier than Seagate, Samsung, etc

PS: Nothing's wrong with the Samsung drive. It is good for that price.

All Right Friends Here is the answer just call up NSP System on 55308542 U will get it here And pls dont add 2 its a tata indicom from mtnl and from cell just add 022

Is there any performance gain with SATA? Because, if i remeber right, i think i read in tom's that both pata and sata have nearly same performance.

Are you trying to store the entire human genome on ur hdd? Or just that of ur entire family?

I think Maxtors are Noisy? Not sure, thats what I heard?[/quote]
yah i heard that maxtors have good performance but are a bit loud while samsung s are bit more quiet

Maxtors are not at all loud.
Believe me,i have used one personally.

i had a 20 GB one as well which was very quiet.. but some people were saying that the high end ones like the 250GB pata one is a bit loud.. have no experience with that drive though

they say the higher capacity drives are faster cause they have higher density.. is that true ? like more data stored per inch

I have two Hitachi 185 GB disks and they've been with me for about two years now, without any probs thats reliable enough ?

Also have 4 160 GB Seagate disks and one has failed on me (A SATA Disk it was), could have just been my luck I guess.

But the Hitachi Disks are way faster access wise compared to the Seagate ones.....just my two bits..

Sandy,
If tight on budget,get Seagate Barracuda 80 GB,very good drive.Costs arounfd 3200.

Avoid SAmsung,it is not bad but still.

Try if you can get Maxtor.

i say get the 80GB WD Caviar SE PATA drive... comes with 8MB Cache and carries 3yr warranty! and costs about 3600 in Mysore.. so it must be a little less in Mumbai... unless the prices have shot up in the last week!

WEll mate, i have 2 SATA drives and 1 IDE drive. copying is hell lotta faster when i copy something to SATA drive than to IDE drive.. for ex, a DVD movie consisting of 4 files totalling 4GB gets copied in 2 mins to a SATA drive ans takes abotu 4-5 mins getting copied to the IDE drive.!

Plus the SATA drives have 8MB cache!

Hey do you have the SATA drives in RAID0 config? One thing going for SATA HDDs is that most motherboards these days have SATA RAID onboard. BTW the Barracuda 80GB is a good choice for 3200 or so. All the new Barracudas have 8MB cache, its not limited to SATA drives now.

No chaos. When i bought 'em, space was a priority over performance! I cudnt afford to lose 240gigs of data had anything gone wrong.

But, if i get a new drive, i'll most definitely try putting them in RAID0

I think the difference i speed of copying the DVD to sata might be bcos the IDE hdd and DVD have to share the IDE controller, wheread the SATA controller is independent of the IDE. Otherwise the speeds are same as the current SATA standard supports speeds no faster than the latest pata drives

There are many good shops in Pune.I have some good sources. Can arrange hardware for good rates.

Also i upped my storage,although a little.

now i have -
1 x 200 GB Seagate Barracuda
1 x 120 GB Seagate Barracuda [ bought yesterday]
1 x 80 GB Seagate Barracuda
1 x 80 GB Hitachi Deskstar.

so that comes out to 480 GB..yipeee.
