All files lost on WD My Book 2.0

I am running Windows 7 on my pc and the WD My Book 2.0 external hard drive is not showing up in my computer. There is also no warranty left on this drive. I have taken it to a repair store and ran a data recovery scan but still there were no files found on this drive. I have not formatted the drive and my pc also doesnt recognizes it? Can anyone tell me how do I solve this issue? Thanks for any help in advance.

Well, if there is too many problems with the hard drive then Data recovery may or may not work. Most of the time you only get corrupted files from your hard drive but if you are lucky then you might get back the files. Also, if there is a serious fault then the hard drive cannot be recoverable at all. Can you try to click on Start and then in the Search type diskmgmt.msc and then right click on it and run as administrator. When a window opens then can you check if your drive is listed there?

Can you go back to the Repair store and ask them to connect it up and also show you whether there are no files or so. Incase they are also not getting their computer to detect your external hard drive then you can ask for your money back. And if the drive is not listed in Disk Management then you wont be able to use any software to recover your files because the computer is not able to see it. The only thing you can do is to send the drive to a very expensive data recovery specialist.

If the drive is showing up in the Disk Management as unallocated then you can try to right click on the drive and then click on Change Drive Letter and Paths to check if you can access the drive again after assigning a drive letter to it. I had this same situation and found out that Windows did not assign a drive letter to it because the automount feature was turned off. I dont know if it will work for you, but it is work a shot before moving to another method.
