There can be several cause of hard disk crashing. Some of the common ones are Viruses,Corrupted Files,Age,Prevention etc. Mostly during hard disk crash you will see a BSOD on your screen which is also known as "BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH". It comes up with a stop error code, something like this:
