BIOS cannot detect BARRACUDA ST31000528AS 7200.12 1TB Drive

My friend game me BARRACUDA ST31000528AS 7200.12 1TB Drive for temporary use. I had connected the drive in my system. The hard disk was first detected in the bios. After after a reboot it disappears. I had checked the drive it is spinning up, so that means that it is receiving the power enough. I checked certain settings in bios that was responsible for drive detection. All are fine. Not the drive is not detected at all.

Change the power outlet of the drive in your system and then check back. Connect the drive and then go in disk management. See in disk management whether the drive is listed or not. If shows empty partition and if you have data do not format it. Or else you can create a simple volume by formatting the drive and giving it partition as you need. The drive might not be working due to several reasons. Remember that a number of bios does not support 3TB drive. You will need to format the drive in a special way so that the entire 3TB is listed or else you will lower space then the original size. The best option is to use the drive in a usb enclosure. It might not give high data transfer rate but the hard drive will become usable.

Check the eeprom. See that it is faulty of not. When system boots in the post message do you see the drive or not. If not then the issue lies with the hard disk.

Connect the drive in your system and boot in Windows. Then download and install Hard disk sentinel. This tool will scan for error related to all drives connected in your system. If still the hard disk is not detected remove it and change the cable. The bios might not be able to detect a 3TB drive. For that the first solution is to update your bios. Make sure that the drive is connected in the right sata port and the jumper settings are proper. Remove any jumper available right now and connect the drive. There are certain interface adapter that can be used as additional support to connect the hard disk in your system.

Sometime due to poor power supply or bad connectivity the drives are not detected. A 3TB drive is high storage drive which needs enough power to run and show the amount of data stored. There are certain scanning tools that can show you what is the health status of your hard disk.

May your system does not support a 3TB drive. 'This is the limit of hardware. You had not mentioned the motherboard you are using. There are separate configuration of connectors present that can be used for the purpose of using a 3TB drive. First all I will recommend you to check that the hard drive is connected properly on the right port. Second go in your system specs and just check that your motherboard supports a 3TB drive or not. If not then there is no use of connecting it to the motherboard by any means. All you can do is by a NAS device and fix the drive in it. Then connect the NAS device via usb interface to the system and access the hard drive.

There are lots of issue related to a 3TB hard drive connectivity. I had seen western digital provides some basic formatting tool that convert the right partition format. But they also recommended to update bios for the process.
