If this doesn't work in regular XP, try it in Safe Mode. With a manager user account, click Start, Control Panel, and managerial Tools. Open Storage, then left-click one time on Disk Management so it is in the right window pane. Now insert your USB drive & see if it comes up without crashing your computer. If you’re USB connects successfully than right-click on it, in the right window pane & select Change Drive Letter & Paths. Now change the letter to something far away from your regular drive letter assignments.

Under "Disk Drives" there ought to be your USB drives. Also under "Universal Serial Bus controllers" there ought to be a list of several USB-types drives. Run the tool manager. Uninstall every one of them & then shutdown & reboot your process. Your PC will "re-locate" them & they ought to work.Reply3: Run the tool manager. Ensure your drivers are up-to-date. Uninstall the USB driver, restart the computer, and then plug in a new USB device. Sounds like a driver conflict or an IRQ conflict. It is only happening when you are connecting the USB to the computer. Have you tried connecting it to different computers? I have a gut feeling that it is definitely the drivers.

The only fixation I can think of is, are you stopping the tool before you remove it? If not go to the task bar after that to the time & you will note a tiny icon with a green arrow above it. Left click on this icon & then click on the item you need to remove this will cease the item & it would be safe to remove, but it’s only a thought the problem might be something different. But what’s the loss in giving it a try.
