Should I install hard disk horizontally or vertically?

Sponsored Links
Is there a variation with hard drives installed vertically or horizontally? What is more easily spoiled in an upright position? I say this because I'm not sure how to install my hard drive in my Antec 182 case, two hdd-cages, and one for vertical and horizontal installation. So should I take help from my friend and install drive in horizontal or vertical position. Please need suggestions as soon as possible because I want to use my computer soon.

Re: Should I install hard disk horizontally or vertically?

I have worked with teams of more than 10 years, so I'm pretty experienced - however, I've never heard of hdd life expectancies in different directions, other than you should choose a direction and stick with it is, not put in vertical and then after a year that is horizontal. I have no idea if that's true, but if necessary, for example, parts wear out differently in different orientations and that the change of direction after a time could cause problems, it would still not matter sufficient, taking into account the life of a hard disk is not how long it lasts, but how long you want it to last - 2 years from now your hard drive is nice small and dirt cheap, and you want it.

Personally, I guess it does not matter at all - at least not with respect to any concerns you mentioned. Cooling altogether is a different matter, however. If your hard drive is in a vertical position, then it won’t catch much air under it, which may be beneficial in some cases. In your case, I doubt that the air flow will be a problem, so you want to mount it choose a way that reduces cable clutter.

From my experience, I would prefer you to install hard disk in horizontal direction. I agree that heat is the first parameter to hold. I will just purchase arrays with RAID hard drive mounted horizontally units last longer. Try it yourself with the hard disk of the same lot number and see, just look at the error count for Horizontal Vertical vs. hard drives. Based on this you can decide in which you want to install the hard disk.

Re: Should I install hard disk horizontally or vertically?

We use PLC with the PC interface is used in industrial sites bad vibration, dust and extreme temperatures and last longer horizontal. I agree that there may be little difference for most, but the experience says that always vertical to go wrong first. Does anyone else remember the HP Mini workstations wild vertical failure had problems? The only consistent answer is that most people overcome their storage before they have to worry about errors.

Re: Should I install hard disk horizontally or vertically?

Of less importance but also prompted me to deepen horizontal / vertical is that I personally have had a pair of vertical drives, with high rates of error with reading data that I have only been able to recover data through placement of the units of the horizontal plane. After retrieving the data discs and pads have continued to work video editing zero for a year and more. These units were especially of Seagate and also made a buzz like a capacitor that is what alerted me to the question first, as I thought there was a power in the case that remained when it was replaced. The noise completely disappeared when inserted in horizontal direction. Originally 5degree inclined noise vanished, but returned for a period of one week. So I prefer that you keep your units horizontal.

You can make a difference depending on the design of the hard drive of many parts and can fail for various reasons. The bearings can be used differently and steady performance in comparison with many stops can make a difference. The expansion and contraction takes place. The list goes on and the small differences in orientation can add, but with so many failure modes and potential manufacturing defects of minor importance which may be unique to a particular unit or manufacturing execution, you get the point?
