    Re: what is CMOS battery

CMOS stands for complementary metal oxide semiconductor the originally technology that was originally used in come of the circuitry that the battery was used you power. The purpose of the CMOS battery most often today is simply to allow your computer to remember what time it is. If the battery dies or removed then when your computer boots it will have forgotten the current date and time.

    Re: what is CMOS battery

The CMOS battery no longer affects whether or not BIOS setting are remembered most of those setting are kept in a type of dedicated flash memory, not unlike the kind that might be inside a USB flash drive. In the past back when the battery was actually powering “CMOS RAM” to retain those setting removing the CMOS battery would cause your BIOS to lose not only date but also the time.

    Re: what is CMOS battery

Nonvolatile BIOS memory refers to small memory on pc mother board that is used to store BIOS setting. it was traditionally called CMOS RAM because it used a low power complementary metal oxide semiconductor powered by a small battery when system power was off. The CMOS RAM and the real time clock have been integrated as part of the South bridge chipset and it may not be a standalone chip on modern motherboard.

    Re: what is CMOS battery

The main function of the CMOS battery is to store the current date and the time. The CMOS is usually powder by a CR2032 cell battery. Most CMOS batteries will last the lifetime of a motherboard but will sometimes need to be replaced. Incorrect or slow system date and time and loss of BIOS setting are major signs of a dead or dying CMOS battery. When we are trying to change the CMOS battery for that we first have to know what model of CMOS battery you are using.
