Information about Intel X25-V 40GB SSD

Intel positions its new entry level SSD X25-V as a fast boot drive for desktop PCs in combination with a hard disk for the data. Also in netbooks see the manufacturer has a suitable application of the X25-V. Intel's X25-V "value" is based on the mainstream variant X25 G2-M . Accordingly found in the entry-level and the Intel SSD controller PC29AS21BA0 together with the 32-MB SDRAM cache. In the Flash devices, the X25-V also uses as the X25-M G2, the 34-nm MLC NAND type Intel 29F64G08CAMD1. However, there are in the 40-gigabyte SSD only five instead of ten MLC NAND. Properly manage the 10-channel Intel-only controller with five active channels, the Flash IC. Intel offers with the new X25-V is a very cheap solid state disk with 40GB capacity. The built in Intel technology will offer in spite of the attractive entry price a convincing performance.

Re: Information about Intel X25-V 40GB SSD

Intel supports the X25-V and the Trim command of Windows 7. Developed specifically for SSDs ATA command changes the deletion strategy, accelerating writes. A SSD writes data in 4 KB blocks, while the deletion is equal to a 512-Kbyte block. In the beginning, the SSD controller write at full speed into free blocks. With increasing life dwindle marked as free blocks. The controller then has more often read before the write operation 512-KByte blocks and check whether the data is still in use before it can delete them. This, in turn, make more and more 4-Kbyte blocks of data fragments that are already stored in other cells, say, described blocks that are not marked as free for the controller. Thus, the SSD is very fast, "trashed" and the SSD controller must read constantly blocks before he can describe it. This costs additional time, thus braking from the write rate. The TRIM feature does the work ahead and delete all previously described, but no longer used 4-Kbyte blocks.

Re: Information about Intel X25-V 40GB SSD

The Intel X25-V reached its five channels with a maximum sequential read rate of 256 Mbytes / s. This corresponds closely to the reading speed of the Intel X25-M G2. A different picture emerges, however, the sequential write: While the Intel X25-M G2 82 MByte / s provides, creates the V-series with 42 MByte / s, only about half. In practical operation, the results reflect only partially: in the typical reading operation with files of varying size, the SSDNow achieved with 97 MByte / s, a good placement.

When writing files to the Intel SSD placed thanks to its 32-Mbyte cache ICs least before the Solid State Disks without data buffer - despite lower sequential write performance. The boot process is done with the X25-V faster than with a 2.5-inch hard drive, but the difference is not serious. Intel's X25-V with 40 GB capacity listen online retailers for around 100 euro. This makes the solid state disk with the cheapest models. It can be the SSD actually only for the intended use as a boot disk in the desktop PC or as a quieter option on netbook or notebook, where there are no capacity demands.

In the desktop computer, an additional hard drive, however, makes the advantage of the silent and low power operation would be lost. The reading performance of the drive is both in sequential and in the practical operation of a very high level - far faster than 2.5-inch hard drives. Significant compromises have to be accepted in writing performance. By the restriction to five channels models such as the X25-M G2 are double, other competitors often faster - and more expensive. However, the acts Intel X25-V also writing in the typical practical use is still quicker than standard 2.5-inch hard drives. Intel's X25-V and the identical Kingston V-Series 40GB seem to just under 100 euro. Although conveniently located, the price per gigabyte see the SSDs but not better than the much faster competition.
